found a house in Hanover

Hi! DH and I found a house we like on realtor.com that's in Hanover. Being that we're in FL now, we're not able to go up and take a look around right now and are relying on the internet to get a feel for Hanover.

Does anyone live there? Visited there? It looks like a cute place, especially with the little downtown. The GreatSchools ratings aren't so hot, but there's always private school as an option.

We'd never buy a house without going up and actually checking it out, but I'm just excited and would love to hear your opinions on Hanover.

Thanks so much :-)

Re: found a house in Hanover

  • Hey! My ILs are from Hanover and I work in Spring Grove, which is just outside of Hanover. The area is a great area. Lots of places to eat, and the Gettysburg outlets are 30 minutes away, which makes of for what they call a "mall", but there is a lot of other shops in the area. The town is decent. It is a small town, but I really do love this area. It is definitely more of a rural area with some suburbs.

What district would the house be in? There is the Hanover SD, which is very small (they don't even bus... all the kids walk) and that is an OK SD, but not really the greatest. There is also Spring Grove, which is about 15 minutes away from Hanover, and they are a good SD. There is Southwestern SD in Hanover, and they are a great SD.

Honestly, I really love the Hanover area. If it wasn't so far from my parents and DH's work we would move there in a heartbeat.

*ETA* There is a decent amount of things to do in the area as well. There are two bowling alleys, there are a bunch of golf courses, Codorus State Park is right outside of Hanover and it has a ton of trails to hike, and a large lake. There is also the Eichleberger Performing Arts Center in Hanover. It is about 30 minutes from York, which has even more to do, like a minor league baseball team. I really like Hanover. It really is a great area to live in.

  • I spent all of my life in Hanover until I went to college at 18, so I can definitely help you out if you have questions!  I think a big factor will depend on where the house is located/how long you plan to live there/school district.

We lived in West Manheim Township, and I went to South Western schools all the way through high school.  My mom also taught at the high school, so I am a bit biased ;)  South West is really growing as a school district due to he number of people that moved to Hanover during the housing boom and then commuted down to MD/Baltimore.  Hanover SD is land locked, so you're not going to find a whole lot of growth there.

As a result of the population growth during the housing boom, there are a lot of new amenities in Hanover that weren't there when I was growing up...better shopping (though the mall isn't that great), Starbucks, more restaurants, etc.  The nice thing is that you're less than 30 minutes to York, 45 minutes to Baltimore, and about 1.5 hours to DC...very close to everything while still having that small town feel.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to e-mail me at justine dot adelsperger at gmail dot com.

  • Thanks so much, girls! We thought that moving down to FL would be our last move and we'd be here forever, but we're really missing everything that's back home. (one word: cheesesteaks...lol) Moving back up to PA will now be our last move, so we're hoping to get a house that we'll be in forever. We've never had much land (1st house = .14 acres, current house = .25 acres), so we're really looking forward to having at least an acre (this particular house is on 4!!!) so we can have a veggie garden and lots of room for our puppy and future children to run around.

Now, if only the realtor would respond to my email...lol...DH and I can't wait to get back up there. Goes to show that you don't know how good you have it until you don't have it anymore.

  • HI!

I now live in the Philly area, but taught in the SW school district for 3 years. I loooooooooooooved it and would love to go back and teach there if my commute wouldnt be 2 1/2 hours one way. LOL.  The area is very nice. As a teacher in a neighboring district I'd still even send my kids to the Hanover school district.  Actually I'd send them to any district surrounding Hanover.

    Good luck!
