Name change help

Hi, can someone please give me a tip on how to make the name change process easier? I saved it somewhere and tried to do a search below, but nothing came up. I think it was DMV first, then social security right? And I can go through the Daley Plaza DMV for quicker service right? Please help. TIA!

Re: Name change help

  • It's social security, then the DMV. You'll have to bring a copy of the marriage certificate and proof of who you are when you go change your name and then your license.
  • I did DMV first (was sad to find that I needed a new pic!) ( I really liked my old one!) In Orland Park. Be prepared just in case....I was not! :(

Some great advice from my MOH was to keep your maiden name State ID (if you have one). This way, if  you do come across a credit card or something in your maiden name, you can prove your identify.

FYI- Soc. Sec. Office usually has a Crazy wait time....bring a book.

    Good luck and Congrats!

  • I did DL first but heard that you should do SS first as some girls have had issues at the DMV when they went to change their name.

Do SS first then DMV.  And hopefully your wait isn't too long at the SS office.

  • for your DL if you're going downtown, go to the express location on Washington. ?It's near Washington & Dearborn. I think the address is something like 55 W. Washington. ?They don't get too busy there and you should be out quickly. ?All I needed was a copy of my marriage license. ?They just look at it really quick and send you through. ?I wish I knew that they were going to take a new pic. ?My hair was a total mess :(
  • I did the SS by mail.  the hrs at the office are crazy and the wait is so strange.  I went twice and both times did not get it done so I just mailed it in and in 2 weeks had it.  Then I did my DL and that was pretty quick.
