Football cake pan

I'm doing a sports theme for my son's 1 yo party next month--and I want to make one of those football cakes (the 3 dimensional looking one--I think the pan is Wilton). Have any of you seen it in a store? I really want to avoid ordering it online if possible, b/c I'd like to also get it in time for the super bowl to have a practice run at it.

Re: Football cake pan

  • I'd check Hobby Lobby, Michael's or even Walmart.  If you order today or tomorrow you should have plenty of time for the superbowl.  It's not until next weekend.

A bake ahead tip:  You can bake the cake in advance.  As soon as it comes out of the oven wrap it in multiple layes of Saran and freeze.  Yes, while it's hot.  All of the condensation will get trapped and soak back into the cake.

Defrost in the fridge a couple of days ahead and frost.  Trust me, you will have a supermoist cake without the last minute strrss.

  • Have you tried Bed, Bath and Beyond?  I've seen funky pans there in the past.

    GL!

  • Sorry...I was just lurking on this board...I'm not a regular. HI!!!

I don't know what size pan you're looking for, but if you're looking for a miniature football for your son to tear into my mom actually made a mini one for my nephew.

She took a larger sized soup can and actually sprayed the inside of it with Pam. Poured the cake batter into it, baked it, then took a butter knife around the rim of the can so it would slip out onto a cutting board.

When it cooled she carved out a football from the cylinder shape and frosted it with laces and all.

His eyes were HUGE when he saw it, and he tried to pick it up since it was his size. It was hilarious!!!

It sounds like a lot of work, but she said it wasn't that difficult at all. Just thought I would share in case it helped. Have fun.

  • I also suggest Wal-Mart or Michael's. I was at Michael's this past Wednesday, and saw a large variety of football-themed stuff in their cake/cupcake decorating section.

We did DS's first birthday as football-themed, too. Had so much fun with it!

Look forward to seeing pics from the party! Smile
