for tomorrow morning

Something that always freaks me out:

FI's mother is notorious for leaving candles burning while she's out. Yes, they're in jars, but damn it, ANYTHING could happen. Why not just blow the sucker out? Yes, you're 67 and a fire hasn't started yet but that's luck.

Am I crazy? Did my mother put some irrational fear of fire in my head as a child?

Re: for tomorrow morning

  • no, you're not crazy.

here's a story for your FMIL:

Mr. Kat's grandmother actually CAUGHT ON FIRE after leaning over a lit candle.  apparently they didn't teach "stop drop and roll" during the depression, because she RAN out side her apartment into the hallway, where a neighbor managed to put out the flames.

she had 3rd degree burns on 70% of her body.  she lived in the local burn unit in a medically induced coma for about 3 weeks after that.  as you might expect, she didn't make it.

open flames are not to be flucked around with.

  • Holy cow kat.  That's crazy.

You are not wrong to be freaked.  I'd be buying her flameless candles next chance I got.

  • That is an excellent idea, 6. I wonder if she would be insulted? The first time I came to her house while she wasn't home I freaked out, and FI was all, "She's always done that. What's the problem?"

Um. Fire. Fire is the problem. kthx.

  • Kat- DH's great uncle caught himself on fire while using a gas stove...he was dead before FIL got there from two houses down the road.   I refuse to own a gas stove now.

I am so paranoid about fire that I won't leave the washer/dryer or dishwasher running if I am not home.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
  • I am super paranoid about candles, too. I will light them occasionally, but only if DH or I will be in the room (and awake) the whole time.  I think I've put enough fear into DH that he won't light them when I'm not around anymore.  He knows that he will forget.
