Saving Money v Company Loyalty

How do you feel about keeping services (i.e. car insurance) with a company because the service you get is outstanding, or if you went with a certain company because of a relationship referral, even if you could possibly save money by switching to another company?

I've been thinking about researching different car insurance, renters insurance, and a couple other services, but so far I've been more than pleased with the companies I have. I'm worried I'll jinx myself by switching to save money. I can't even bring myself to do the research yet. I know I'm being silly and I should at least look.

  • For insurance and similar services - I'd go with the better deal.

  • We have USAA for all of our insurance (my dad is former military and my parents have USAA, so I was able to get policies since I'm his daughter - and now T has them too because he's married to me).

I don't think we have the best rates we could get, but they're definitely comparable.  The selling point is the service.  They are amazing for everything and are so easy to work with when we need to - they're available 24/7 and take care of all leg work.

  • If the difference isn't huge, I'm OK with paying a little more for good service.  But all else being equal I'd go for the better deal.  Remember, you can always switch back.

  • Go with the best coverage- not necessarily the cheapest. If they are the same coverage, then go with the better costs, but just really compare those numbers.

We have Liberty Mutual. They are more expensive than others, but they insure us due to the breed our dog is, so I pay for it. We were shot down by so many insurance companies all because we had a pit bull.

We have had 2 claims (one HO claim when the bathtub had a leak behind the wall and flooded the downstairs unit and 1 for a cracked windshield) and the customer service has been great.

  • Money would be the #1 factor in my decision when it comes to things like that.. Dh and I have switched car insurance companies multiple times over the past few years because of money.
  • I always go with the better deal, but I don't really interact with my insurance agents much (knock on wood!) so good customer service isn't as important to me.
