Please recommend your GPS system

DH and I are looking for a good GPS system.  The one we use now is Cobra and we hate it because it breaks down frequently and is difficult to use.

 TIA!

  • I have a Garmin Nuvi 255 that I love- it is great for navigating difficult places like DC.

  • Garmin Nuvi 255 or 205. The 255 will give you street names and not jsut turns. Either are perfect for driving and finding locations nearby your current location.

  • We also have the Garmin 255WT (255 with widescreen & lifetime traffic). You can often find it on sale at Best Buy.
  • I have a tomtom and my husband has a garmin. I'm not sure which model numbers.  I have found by using each one that my TomTom is faster to find a satellite signal and is also keeps a signal in a big city better. The garmin seems to lose it among the tall buildings which makes having a nav system useless. In the suburb's I've found that they are pretty even.  I like that my DH's garmin says the street names. For example turn left on Walnut instead of Turn left. But both companies make units that do text to speech now. I just have the generation of tomtom that doesn't do that.

I would stay away from smaller brand gps because their maps don't seem to be as accurate.  Good luck.

We have the 205 - we did the side-by-side comparisons online and that was the only difference and the 205 works great for us.

  • We've had different tom toms (husband is a techie) for years and been very happy with them.
  • Ditto the Garmin 205 and 255. We chose the 255W the day after Thanksgiving. We got a great deal on it, and absolutely love it, so far!

  • garmin nuvi 255W I love it! It talks and tells you street names also shows the street name and direction you will be turning on the top of the screen. It's quick too, quicker than DH's old nuvi anyway. It is also very loud, good if your car has a noisy interior. We also use the garmin portable friction mount instead of the ones that come with the gps. Just so we can hide the mount which makes it less conspicuous so no one wants to break into the car.

  • We have a Garmin 265WT - got it for refurbished on Amazon for around $165 last year. Lifetime free traffic, Bluetooth, says the street names. DH used it out on business in other states, I use it for business around Florida - reacts very quickly in recalculating if you miss a turn or want to go a different route. Even my technologically challenged mom has used it a few times and didn't even have to call me for help!

  • Ditto Garmin 255W - love it!
