vitamins

My doctor gave me a prescription for prenatals, since we're TTC.  I asked the pharmacist for the ingredients list (the prescription didn't include one), and I am pretty horrified at all the "inactive" ingedients.  There are at least 26, many of which I strive to avoid, and I don't feel comfortable putting some of those ingredients into my body every day.

Does anyone know of a good, more natural multivitamin brand?  Where do you get it?

Re: vitamins

  • I buy Nature Made and Sundown Naturals vitamins. They are inexpensive and pretty widely available. I don't know anything about the companies though, so I'm not recommending them as "green" or environmentally responsible or anything. They both make prenatals.

I just deleted a bunch of stuff b/c I checked and both prenatals contain artificial ingredients, so you probably aren't interested in them. I just can't pay out the wazoo for vitamins, and these seem better than other widely available and reasonably priced brands. I also don't like mega doses, and my NM multi doesn't have that.

  • I take MegaFoods multi vitamin.  It uses 100% whole food nutrients (ie the ingredients come from real food) that aren't GMO's, certified organic herbs and is tested to be free of herbicides, pesticides and soy.  The inactive ingredient list is extremely short.  Here's their "Baby and Me" vitamin.  You can see the ingredients if you click on the supplement facts link at the bottom right of the screen.  http://megafood.com/products/whole-food-womens-prenatal/baby-and-me/

  • I like Rainbow Light or New Chapter.  Both are a lot cheaper on vitacost.com

Ditto Rainbow Light.  You can even take them on an empty stomach!

I was horrified to learn that the Target brand that I used to take had Red 40 & Blue 1 in them.

  • I use to be a buyer for WHole Foods, and out of all the companies out there no one really compares to New CHapter.

I take the New CHapter Prenatal.  It is 3 pills, that I take with my main meals of the day (but I can take it on an empty stomach and be ok).  I like it b/c it organic and the nutrients are food grown (same with Rainbow light)  Also I like that it is not super high in any nutrient.

I get it at webvitamins.com and usually it is 40%less then what it is at the store.

    I also take a separate cal/mag.

  • Is there a reason why the doctor wants you on prescription PNV vs over the counter? If so you may have to find a supplement to also take with the over the counter PNV (ie: folic acid).

No, not at all, sorry I should have mentioned that. She gave it to me because it's actually cheaper for me that way (some pharmacies around here give them for free or dirt cheap with a prescription). After looking at the ingredients though, I'm willing to pay a bit more for something more natural.

Thank you all for your suggestions!
