iud insertion??

ok im getting an iud on feb 1. i keep hearing that is painful to get it in. is that true and what is the pain like??

Re: iud insertion??

  • took three tries to get mine in.  I just had it put in a couple of weeks ago.

Uncomfortable, but nothing like giving birth.  Granted, I did take a xanex before! :D

  • My doctor told me to expect pain and to bring a driver.  I have never had children before so it hurt more.  It took a few times to fully get it inserted.  For me it felt like a sharp stabbing, I really can't describe it, it hurt so much I ended up turning white and the nurse made me sit for an hour afterwords.

  • Uncomfortable but not unbearable. Take two advil before you go. That's what I did and all was fine. BTW, I've never had kids and the saying is that it's worse for women who haven't had kids. Ahhhh...whatever. Truthfully, here is what I felt: a prick,a medium period like cramp,a doozy of a cramp that lasted maybe 15sec. and that was it it was done. Literally took from the time I was brought into the room till the time I left, 5min. Everyone experiences pain differently so the main thing is to not get yourself to worked up about it. The more scared/nervous/worked up you are about it the worse it will be.

  • Yes, it was uncomfortable but it wasn't unbearable!  I would consider the pain to be as bad as a hard contraction during labor, breathe thru it and then it is over.  I took some tylenol and walked out of the office just fine. Cramped for the rest of the day but then nothing.

And I agree, the more worked up about it you get the more it is going to hurt.  So relax and you'll be out of there before you know it.

  • A strange uncomfortable sensation that was very short-lived.   That's how I would describe my Mirena insertion.  I have had dental work that was worse.
  • Thanks for this question, I'm having the Paraguard put in this Thursday. I have 800 mgs of ibuprofen, two Xanax and a friend who has the Paraguard already taking me. So I think I've crossed my t's and dotted my i's. But I'm still pretty frightened. No kids here so I'm falling victim to the tale of it hurting much worse. I think it's more that it hurts in a place women who haven't had kids yet are sort of unaware about.
  • I was looking for this post. thanks for the honesty
  • Sharp pain when inserted.. then I had bad cramps all night.  Kind of like light contractions before giving birth... nothing unbearable.  And I didn't take any Advil until I went to bed that night so I'm sure it could have been less painful.  I would suggest bringing a driver though... no one told me that before the appt and then my dr was mad that I was driving home alone.

  • I had my copper iud put in in November. The insurtion was a short seiries of stabbing pains but I was up and out in 10mins. I did take two Advil before hand. I drove home(1hr) myself.

That evening I had the worst cramps of my life for about three hours but then I slept fine and was pretty much back to normal the next day. I love it. You don't have to worry about a thing and you don't even know it's there.

My word or advice is only take Advil or Motrin because they are smooth muscle relaxers and your uterus is a smooth muscle. Advil honestly did wonders.

     Good Luck!

  • It took two tries to get mine in.  I haven't had kids.  I took motrin before and after, and they gave me a hot pack for my abdomen while they were inserting it.  It felt kind of like menstrual cramps but more short and intense.  I also felt a little bit nauseous while they were pushing it in.  But, really it was no big deal compared to other pains most of us have experienced at one time or another (I mean injuries, surgeries, that kind of thing.)  I highly recommend it.
  • I haven't had kids. I got the copper IUD.

One sharp pain as they inserted it, then period-type cramps until the Xanex wore off. I had a local anesthetic, which helped with the immediate pain. Once the pain relievers wore off, I was on high dosage ibuprofin every 4 hours for the next WEEK, and having cramps that were far worse than anything I had felt before. Constantly.

However, after that week was over, it was *almost* normal, except that my first period was a bit heavier/cramp-ier than usual. Since then (it has been 5 cycles,) things have gotten progressively easier, although my period is still heavier than usual.

And DESPITE all of this, it was SO TOTALLY WORTH IT for us. Not having to worry about pills/sponges/condoms/rings/spermicide...and being off of hormones has done wonders for my sex drive. I have also lost weight and stopped retaining water. All in all, I'm happier and feel sexier. What's the point of being on birth control if you never want sex?
