possibly moving to KC

Hello!

I have a phone interview with a company in KC next week.  I am interested in the position and obviously they have some interest in me... if this moves forward, DH and I will need to seriously think about relocating!

Here's some background:  We are in Milwaukee now and have lived here for 6 years.  I have family in NW Missouri so I'm familiar with the state, but I haven't been to KC since I was in high school.  I don't think my 10 year old opinions of the city are much use to me now!

So here are my questions -

We are a 30-ish couple with a small dog but no kids.  No plans to have kids in the next 3-4 years.  We own a 3 bed/1.5 bath home in Milwaukee with a decent size yard and patio.    We love neighborhoods... communities with people who get to know each other and walk around.  I like shops/bars/restaurants/grocery stores/farmers markets within a short distance. I love old buildings and historic houses but I'm also worried about efficiency and things breaking.  We both work in marketing and are pretty hip & trendy, if I do say so myself!

I think we would consider a single family home or a condo, as long as there was a small yard for our dog.  However, if we did the condo routeI would prefer our own entrance and not to share walls :)

The company that I'm interviewing with is near the River Market.   DH has not even started looking... no need to do that until my job starts to pan out.

So the big question - Where should we live?  I have no preference for living in Kansas or Missouri.  Should I?  What are the pros/cons?

 THANK YOU!

Re: possibly moving to KC

  • The River Market area sound like it might be a good fit for you as far as living goes. Especially if you are working there too! There are bars, shops, etc. all within blocks and a huge farmer's market every weekend.

Parkville is a cute area too, with lots of historic buildings and unique shops.

I live in Liberty which is about 10 miles North of downtown. We love it here. We aren't the type who could handle living downtown, but we love to visit downtown and it's a short drive.

Here in Liberty there are quite a few historic homes near William Jewell college and the Liberty square. There is a farmer's market there during the summers on Saturdays.

For me, the best thing about Liberty is that it is only about 10-15 minutes to drive to wherever we want to go in the KC area.

I am a teacher, but do real estate on the side-so feel free to email me if you ever want more housing info. (bmw8140 at hotmail) I'd be happy to help and I've lived in this area all my life, so I know it well.

  • Thank you for your response!  I completely forgot about Liberty.  A college friend grew up there and loved it.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I spent some time this AM looking at homes for sale and I think I've given up the condo idea.  We really need the yard/space for our dog.

Of course, this all hinges on me getting the job!  We would need a fantastic relocation package to make the move; I'm very worried about selling our MKE house.   Cross your fingers!

    Thank again for the help

  • Hi Mrs.R

I lived downtown for 3 years, within walking distance of River Market, I LOVED it down there and was sad to go (DH got transfered to Switzerland for 2 years).

If you do get the job and decide to take it I would suggest living on the MO side for tax purposes (as long as both you and DH work in MO) income taxes get a little tricky if you work in MO and live in KS. It's not a huge deal but can save you some $$

There are some great neighborhoods in MO that I love. Have you thought about Waldo or Brookside? Many of the houses are older with a lot of character but lots have been remodeled.

If you'd like some help looking around check out www.websterteam.com It's FIL's Real Estate website and has some really good stuff on there (oh, and check out the blog - I'm the resident blogger).

Feel free to email me. I'm happy to help in any way!! crystal at websterteam dot com

  • I am still newish to the area (we moved down here about 2 1/2 year ago from MN) so I am not much help to the area. DH and I live in Lees Summit and love it. I grew up in Milw. and miss all the wonderful summer activities. Hope everything works out for you and good luck!

  • Could luck on your phone interview! How exciting!

I grew up in Overland Park (on the Kansas side) and love it! Based on what your describing, you might really enjoy either Prairie Village or the Brookside area. Both have older homes, lots of character and tons of young couples/families. They also both have great little shops and aren't really over run with strip malls and chain stores.

I am a full time realtor and if you want to start looking online, email me. I can set you up on Prudential's My Home Search...it's wonderful because it's concurrent with our MLS system and allows you to save searches (so you don't have to recreate the wheel everytime you go in!). I'd also be happy to answer any questions or send you some info about relocating. My email addy is christian at prukc dot com.

     Best of luck!

  • You may want to try Fairway or Prairie Village in Kansas or as others have said Brookside, Waldo area on the Missouri side. Those are nicer, older area that have a lot of character and are walking distance to some shops etc. The Kansas side does have higer taxes but they aren't ridiculous and there are some perks such as the Johnson County school system is very good and on average much better than that of Jackson County which may not be of much interest to you now.

  • Thanks everyone!

The phone interview went well; they are flying me down for an in-person interview in the next couple of weeks.   I will post an update after that.  I'm going to do my best to *not* think about this until after the in-person discussion.

    Wish me luck!
