S/O decorating: What's your style?

I never really knew what my decorating style was until we bought our house.  I'm definitely traditional, but updated traditional I guess.  I like things that look nice now and will still look nice 20 years from now.  I also like things to be simple and clean, not too much clutter or too busy.

How about you?

Re: S/O decorating: What's your style?

  • I'm in the process of discovering my style. We are first time homeowners so we are slowly making it our own. I like clean lines and simple colors. I'm really drawn to dark wood right now and have to keep reminding myself that EVERY piece of furniture in our house can't be dark Smile My MIL tends to have pretty gaudy decorations (mirrored shelves on her living room walls) so whenever DH or I pick something up that is borderline gaudy we say, "That is very {insert MIL's name here}
  • Our home is an interesting mix between modern and traditional. I like traditional for the most part, but I am open to other styles. We live in a colonial and it has a lot of wanescoting (sp?) and crown molding. We are wood floor people. We also like the light blue, chocolate brown, and tan, but we also have green, red, and brown as wall colors in other rooms. I love a clutter-free home, but I have never had one!

  • I like modern, with some vintage mixed in.  I love mid-century modern furniture.  We live in an apartment right now so I've held off on purchasing any major pieces of furniture or art.  Once we get into a house, I will go crazy!
  • traditional/transitional.  I also like some mission pieces.
  • I am traditional style, but not afraid of color. Our bedroom is a fabulous mid/dark blue, with a sky blue for the master bath to accent it. I like clean lines and very traditional furniture, like our sleigh bed.

  • I'm still trying to figure this out myself. I definitely like some traditional elements, like wainscoting and crown moldings. But I also like "warmer" modern, not the sterile and stark contemporary look. I don't like grainy wood and love white trim or dark-stained furniture.

    Definitely not a clutter person, MIL has that country clutter/teddy bears picture and her house looks like the general store in Cracker Barrel...

    I always feel like our future house will be a confused picture, but hopefully it will all come together somehow!

  • Overall, I like clean lines and colors.  I love our mission style living room tables.

    It varies from room to room though.  I think our bedroom furniture is very traditional, but I like more modern wall colors (but we rent now and can't paint).

    I'm starting to collect pictures of things I like now, so when we buy a house, maybe next year, I'll have a plan for what I want to do, instead of just feeling my way through it blindly, like I did in our last house.  I think we did a really good job of picking out furniture that will suit our tastes for a long time, but can go with either traditional or modern accents.
