i need computer help, please
i hope someone here can tell me which modem to get. i am not stupid, i am pretty sure of it.
i need a modem that can pick up a wireless signal from an already-installed cable connection.
TIA
Re: i need computer help, please
a modem or a wireless router?
what problem are you trying to solve/what device are you trying to connect?
i guess a wireless router? ok, maybe i am stupid. i'm not, but i am lazy when it comes to the electronics.
here's the situation:
we have one computer with a wireless router. it gets online no problem. we have a second that has no modem whatsoever and cannot connect to the internet. we need pc #2 to get on the internet, and maybe i can go into best buy or whatever and ask for help, but i just want to order what i need online and be done with it. both are desktops. still not stupid.
So the second computer couldn't connect to the internet even with a wire?
If that's the case, then yes, you need a modem. But that's a DAMN old desktop.
If the second computer does have an ethernet connection (where you could physically plug it in to the internet if you had an outlet), then a wireless adapter is all you need. We have this one:
NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter WNDA3100 Network adapter - Hi-Speed USB
is it old? we got it in 2005. i'd get a new one because it's got issues, but i don't want to spend the money since we only use it for fun. correct, pc #2 cannot plug into anything.
wireless adapter won't work, we need a wireless modem.
or a new computer, i guess.
now i just need to know what modem to get.
Hmm. I'd think an ethernet connection was pretty standard by 2005. MIL's computer has it, and we bought that one in December 2004.
A new computer wouldn't be that expensive, really. You could probably get one for $300, esp. since you already have a monitor.
I found this, but I'm not sure it'll help you:
How to Buy a Wireless Modem for a Desktop Computer | eHow.com
Sadly, I think I'd go to Best Buy.
Sorry.
DG, you are of no help.
but it's okay. i think it is better i go in person anyway so i know what i am getting, especially since ai am not familiar with what i need. DH knows what we need and what to get, but he's working all week. we'll just go when he gets out of work on saturday. ain't no thang.
