Vinegar + Water + Dr. B's = : (

I made an all-purpose spray with vinegar, water & Dr. Bronner's (liquid)...When I first mixed it up, I used warm water so that the Dr B's would mix in well; now the soap has solidified and floats on top of the mixture, and no matter how much I shake it, won't mix back in. Any suggestions for this? Or does it just need to be mixed up in small doses, every time using warm water?

Re: Vinegar + Water + Dr. B's = : (

  • That sounds gross :( I've never mixed all three; I clean with vinegar + water OR diluted Dr. B's, depending what the surface is.

  • Hmmm, maybe you used too much Dr. B's?   I mix mine up the same way and have never had that happen.    A few times, I have used too cold water and it did that at first, but it mixed together once it was at room temperature.    I only use a couple drops of Dr. B's per spray bottle.

Where do you store your spray bottle when you aren't using it?   Could it be in too cold of a spot, so the soap separates?    I usually mix mine up once every couple of weeks, and just keep it on the counter since I use it for everything.

I hope you figure it out.   I love this as an all-purpose cleaner....I use it for almost everything!   Good luck!

  • That happened to me when I left the bottle in a very cold room. I make smaller batches now.. and keep it at room temp : )
  • That has happened to me too.  I mix hot water with the Dr.  Bronner's and shake it up really well.  Then add the vinegar.  From what I've read, the Dr.. Bronner's solidifies like that when it comes into contact with the vinegar.

Haha, I think this was the case -- I used like 2 Tbsps of Dr B's!  Maybe I misread someone's recipe.  I store it under the sink, so I don't think it's a temperature issue, but it makes sense to mix it with the water BEFORE adding the vinegar!  Lesson learned Embarrassed Thanks ladies!

  • The first time I mixed my cleaner there was no clumping.  Every time after that it's clumped.  I've mixed it exactly the same way every time so I have no idea why it does it.

I've found that if you shake the bottle really well before you use the cleaner it will mix back in for a little while.

  • Oh yeah, it is nasty! It feels like Crisco if you touch it. You can still use it to clean if you want, though. For next time, shredded Dr. B's bars mix much better.

If you still want to juse use the liquid, it is blends slightly better if you mix the water and soap first and then add the vinegar. If you mix the vinegar and soap without water, it is all over. Icky city!

    I swear by the bars!

  • Oh, and you may have added too much soap. You need very little in the bottle.
