hmonkey, please join me

in minipin parenthood.

i pay $24 a month for his insurance, even though he's young and healthy.

i spend $30 every 3 months on his food. he eats small bites adult food from Science Diet, which isn't the cheapest.

i bathe him myself, once a month. it costs $25 every other month for me to bring him to the vet and have his nails trimmed. he rarely sheds, even though i often find dog hair on me.

he's super fun, and he's good in the apartment because he's small.

he eats baby carrots for his treats.

the only drawback to having a pet while renting is that you won't have as many options available when you choose to move if you continue to rent. pet ownership isn't accepted everywhere like mastercard.

but i highly recommend the breed. i chose this line of dog because of the minimal grooming and long life expectancy. he's really cheap to maintain, so we go a little overboard in buying him toys.

  • Also, if there is a feed store around you, food should be cheaper there. We feed Jake and the fosters Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's soul and it is cheaper than any of the "premium" foods at PetsMart (and it much better quality). I don't know anything about minipins except Zilla likes them, and she is awesome, so they are awesome through transitive law.

  • i'm actually pretty close to getting another one. it's a good thing we still have the apartment to deal with, or else it'd be minipin central in my place. i really want another one to keep mr scrappy company.

a few people know of better food than science diet. it's definitely not the best, but i had a bad experience when i experimented on dogzilla, so never again will i do that.

  • The only reason we switched was for Higgins. We couldn't feed him what we had been feeding Jake, because it had corn in it. (Higgins was allergic to corn and would puke anything but this food up all over the place) It is important to keep dogs on a consistent diet. Jake, however, is a freakin' Hoover and will eat anything and everything and never has problems.

It is easier to have two dogs than one, because they entertain each other (and they do cute stuff).

  • I'm not a minpin owner but Scrappy has converted me. He's so sweet.

We have Fat Cat on sci-diet kitten food. It went over so much better than iams.

  • Amen to all things spoken above (er, except the breed part, I went for the 50lb mixed up mutt)

And especially the food thing.  (we feed California Naturals which we buy at a pet-food-store in nearby Yuppieville.  It costs us less per day than feeding her CRappy Iams/Science Diet stuff.   We tried to see if we could do cheaper w/o feeding her the equivilient of McDonalds every day and more or less can't.)

    Cats can entertain dogs too.

And obedience was a 1 time expense that was totally worth it :-)

  • interesting.

zsa, as a weenie dog owner, can you comment as well?  one of sister's bf's has a dachshund, but he is terribly, terribly behaved.

I wasn't asked but I've never known a weenie dog that wasn't a *bit* of an ass.  They're smart, and they were bred to be somewhat vicious (badger fighting!) and smart =/= trainable.  They're stubborn and like to get their own way.

  • dachshunds have LOUD LOUD LOUD barks.

if we went for a larger breed, i'd want an australian shepherd, or even a mutt. i am not particular to having a full bred dog of any kind, but there are so many minpins for adoption. i was shocked. i guess they don't appear cuddly, but this guy only wants to snuggle all day if i let him.

  • Everyone join me in a round of "Peen on the Floor" sung to the tune of "Pants on the Ground."

Okay, now that that is over...dachshunds are very stubborn, difficult to train, may never be fully housebroken, and yes, their barks are loud.  But they are freakin' adorable and full of love and the short-hairs don't shed (much).  They are also too short to get into much trouble.  And last but not least, they provide many opportunities for weiner jokes.

I just a friendly gal looking for options.

  • Daushunds were bred to bark...it is a terribly hard behavior to extinguish because they love, love, love to bark.

  • I second the minpin.  DH and I got one last year and she is the cutest thing ever!  She learns very quickly, rarely sheds, and loves to cuddle and give kisses.
