I am a lurker, but I couldn't wait to post this. Our students took the first two parts of the Comprehensive English Regents Exam. The article and chart they needed to use in an essay was all about organics(a real, published article and chart from 2006--I left my paperwork at work, but I can get you the specifics later on). It really focused on how organic food/produce/poultry/etc are on the rise, and went on about different industries someone could go to in order to help the organic movement(and colleges that have specific degrees that focus on the organic farming style).
The thing that made me say WTH was that it listed Walmart as the company that invests most in bringing organics to their stores(can't remember the exact wording). I'm sure that has changed since 2006, though.
Re: NYS wants our students to be more green!
I'm not a huge fan of WalMart (ok, not even a tiny fan!) but they do stock organics of some kinds (I wouldn't know what) and I have to admit, having organics, even if it doesn't meet my preferences, available to the greater public is good.
Thats interesting that was the subject in the exam. I wonder how that came about?
It is the 11th grade exam that tests all of the standards. They have a two day(turns out to be 6 hours total)--Four essays and about 26 multiple choice questions. It is a crapshoot what the state puts on the first part of the exam(listening passage and the article/chart--usually science or social studies related). A few years ago, there was a similar task about straw bale houses. I think June was about adding more bike friendly routes to a city(something along those lines).
As an aside...
Walmart is funding our community's Sustainable Jersey Certification with $200K in grants to help us achieve our goal of certification, which in turn makes us eligible for more "green grants". Not bad.
