Cuban coffee experts?

When DH and I were in Miami with SIL not too long ago, we had cuban coffee.  I *think* it was called Colada?  Really strong, really sweet, awesome.

We have an espresso machine and I've done some research on google.  Is it simply brewing espresso with brown sugar in the grinds?  I would love to try to make it at home, but wanted to know if any experts had any tips.  What coffee to use, dark or light brown sugar, etc?

TIA!!

Re: Cuban coffee experts?

  • Hmm, I don't know. They do sell some Cuban brands of espresso in the latin foods aisle at Publix, but I'm not sure if they're different than regular espresso or how you make them.

    GL!

  • I make cuban coffee at home but i dont put brown sugar in it.

I bring a cup of water to boil, put in Pilon coffee in the pot and let it boil. While on the stove i put a coffee cup half full in the mic. until steaming hot. I use a spoon to get top layer off and pour coffee from stove in a coffee sock. Pour coffee in hot milk. WALLLAA!

  • If you put in hot milk that would be Cafe con Leche (kinda like a cafe latte)

Buy cafe Bustelo or Pilon (I prefer Bustelo)

    Set up the expresso machine-

For this part I have a little metal cup (use what you can)

In a metal cup (or whatever you use) spoon in the amount of sugar you'd like. I like mine super sweet so I use about 4tsps. Put in expresso machine and let the first couple of drops of coffee fall into your cup and switch it our for the pot the expresso machine brings. As it brews stir the few drops of coffee and sugar until its light brown and foamy.

Mix brewed coffee with sugar mixture and stir well to mix.

    Enjoy.

  • *espresso

Oh and yea no brown sugar is involved lol at least I've never used it.

This is what I mean by metal cup.

This is what I make my mine in :)

  • My parents make it like mannyandnery!!

They've recently started using light brown sugar because it's a little bit better for you, but it doesn't change the flavor.

  • Thanks so much ladies.

That will work perfectly!  I have a metal cup that we froth the milk in and it will work perfectly for that.  :D
