Visit to Ashland- where to fly into?

I am planning a trip to Ashland, in July, and I am not sure which airport is the cheapest to fly into from Houston, Texas. I was even told to consider flying into San Francisco and driving to Ashland as an alternative (convenience of having a car and beautiful drive and scenery). Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Visit to Ashland- where to fly into?

  • If you flew into SF and took the coast up (gorgeous), it would take you about 5-6  hours. From Sacramento, it would be up the 5 (not as gorgeous) and about 4-5 hours.

You could also fly into the Medford Airport, which is small but about 1/2 hour outside of Ashland...

  • Ditto what she said... I would fly into Medford, personally, but it would probably cost you more money, as it's a small airport.  Are you coming for the Shakespeare Festival??

  • Ashland is about 4.5-5 hours away from Portland so if you are looking to fly into a large airport I'd choose Portland over San Francisco. The easiest would be Medford of course and that's what I would do personally. Once you factor in the mileage on the rental car, it might not be any cheaper to fly into the larger airports, but you'll have to try out some different options on a travel website to find out. Any flight you take to Medford will probably stop in Portland or San Francisco anyway. Either way, you'll most likely want to rent a car if you want to go anywhere besides the downtown core of Ashland. I have family down in that area and there are lots of really beautiful places to go see once you are in Southern Oregon.
  • The Eugene airport is closer than PDX to Ashland.
