iPad as an e-reader...

So is this screen going to be backlit like a computer screen?  One of the nice things about the nook (and the Kindle, I would imagine) is that the e-ink technology means that you don't get the eye fatigue you get from reading off of a computer screen.  So that makes me think that this tablet from Apple is not a nook/Kindle killer for those of us who want a device to read books on...

Re: iPad as an e-reader...

  • I dunno, I've never had a problem with reading books on my old PDA. I read all of LOTR & the first 4 Harry Potters on my tiny backlit screen when I was in college. As long as you keep the brightness down, it's not that bad at all. The book interface is one thing that made me really happy during the presentation.

I also like the fact that they're using the e-pub format.

  • I think the ipad looks really cool and would be interested in having one...but at this time I wouldn't trade my kindle as my primary ereader.  I wear glasses, get eyestrain when I spend too much time reading on my computer so I don't know if it would work as an e-reader for me. I read about 2-3 books a week both for work and pleasure so the e-ink on the kindle/sony/ nook is a godsend.  Of course who knows how this will evolve...can't wait to see.
  • I will not run out March 1st to buy it. I will watch and see what happens first, then if it appers to be a good deal-I will still wait a couple months and buy it for less on ebay. I refuse to pay full price for anything in this economy if I don't have to.

  • I think it will probably be a very cool product, but except for my iPod touch, I am not at all an Apple person.  I don't need all the bells and whistles of a Mac, so getting a PC for a much lower price makes more sense to me.  I also like having a dedicated e-reader that has e-ink, so the nook fits the bill for me (and I love it!).  And I am a BlackBerry girl...even when the iPhone comes to Verizon, I don't plan to make the switch.  I am, however, looking forward to what Android phones come out in the future!

I could see getting one someday, but it would be an addition to what I already have and use, and it certainly would not replace my nook!
