reusable "to-go" containers

Where can I find these?  I know they exist because my husband has seen people with them at restaurants.

Re: reusable "to-go" containers

  • Cool; i've never seen them.  I just bring a couple nesting tupperware-type containers.

  • couldn't this be any container?

I never thought to do this, but good idea!

  • I was just thinking about this yesterday.  I know it's the green thing to do and who cares what people think, but I don't know if I can do it.  (We do bring our own pyrex to ILs for leftovers!)  Smile

  • All the waste is one of my biggest peeves about takeout! Did you see the fridge stuffed with styrofoam on that photos of fridges pictorial?? OMG!

But I have to admit, I'm not one to bring reusable containers. Instead I've just gotten to where I don't order takeout much, and it also motivates me to use restaurants that either use reusable containers (like a Chinese place I like, I get a gazillion uses out of their soup containers and that's all I order there, and then I can recycle it) or compostable ones.

  • I don't think I have seen a place around here use styrofoam take out containers in years! Most places are using the reuseable ones.
  • I don't know where you can get them but we went to this pizza place in Downtown San Diego once and they gave us one with our left-overs!  We were shocked, I LOVE that this restaurant did that.
  • Not exactly what you are asking, but one of my tricks is to just ask for a piece of foil. Once home, the foil can be washed and reused or recycled (if foil recycling is available in your area). Obviously, this doesn't work for liquidy leftivers, it does for pretty much anything solid.

  • DH and I try to order less food, like split an appetizer and an entree, to save money and not have leftovers that are too small for either of us.  If we're going to a place we know has large portions, for example I cannot finish our Thai restaurant's Pad Thai, I bring a pyrex container.  I also go to restaurants that don't use disposable serving items, like plates, silverware, or cups.  I love Panera, but they use disposable everything!  I got my soup in a plastic cup the last couple times Tongue Tied  Gross.

  • I have a tupperwear type container that folds flat, and I just leave it in my car so that it is always on-hand.  I wish I could tell you who makes it, but my grandma bought it.
  • I've actually seen more restaurants recently giving out paper to-go containers. It can't be recycled since its touched food, but at least its better then styrofoam. If it didn't get to greasy I suppose you could try to compost it.
