Cool Recipe Management Program

I was having a really hard time keeping track of recipes, and had stuff everywhere, then I started putting all my recipes into word processing files on my computer, so I could take my laptop into the kitchen.  But that wasn't all that helpful, either.

I found this program called YUM, for the Mac, and it's awesome.  It's a pricey $26, but you can try it for I think 15 days, without giving them any  info.  I originally thought it was free, so I downloaded it, and was a little put off by the 15 day trial before it would stop working.  But I added a few recipes to it (and kept the backups) and I really liked it, so FI convinced me to buy it. I can categorize my recipes, tell it what I have in stock, and create shopping lists based on the recipes I choose.  And then I can export it to my iPhone- so if I'm out shopping I can see what I need.

It's pretty useless if you don't have a Mac, but you can still email or print your shopping list from your Mac if you don't have an iPhone.  I expected this program to be really disappointing (and it was until I played with it), but I really like it and thought I'd share. Their website is creativebe.com/yum

(I'm not sure if we're supposed to post links like this, and I promise I'm not plugging a product- I don't know this company, but I wanted to pass on useful info.  If I'm breaking any rules please tell me and I'll take it down right away!!)

Re: Cool Recipe Management Program

  • That sounds really cool! I don't have an iphone but it would still be useful. Thanks for posting!
  • You're not breaking any rules at all; don't worry about it!  Glad you found something that works for you.  I keep everything on my laptop like you described and that seems to work fine for me.  It probably helps that I have a smallish laptop.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Having a computer in the kitchen, imo, is pretty much the best thing ever.  Instant information access.  It's awesome.  My laptop is pretty large, but my kitchen is also kinda like an aisle (stove, sink, some countertop, and overhead cabinets on one side, and a large countertop area on the other side) so I can put my laptop on one side, mix things next to it, then turn around and cook on the other side to avoid splatter.
