Question about schools in the area..

Hi!

I am moving to the Muscatine area from Colorado soon to be closer to my husband's family. I am a teacher and will have to start looking for a job soon in the area.  I don't want to travel too far, but was curious about any input/reputation of the following school districts:

Muscatine, Louisa-Muscatine, West Liberty, Wilton, Rockridge, Davenport

Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Question about schools in the area..

  • I have a lot of friends who teach in the Davenport/Bettendorf school districts. One of my best friends taught in Louisa/Muscatine and only stayed there 1 year. We are currently pregnant and live in the Davenport school districts but will be moving to Bettendorf/Pleasant Valley school district as the time comes to send our little one to school.

    Hope that helps a little!

  • I have family that work in the Davenport schools... they are hit or miss to be honest. If you are considering the length of commute to get the Dport or Louisa-Muscatine schools, also consider Durant schools (and other Cedar County schools). They may be the same distance, or shorter, depending on where you live in the Muscatine area. Durant has a good reputation.

The Dport schools cover a large area of land in Scott County, not all are in the city limits of Dport either... that might vary up your commute time.  DH and all is family are products of the Dport schools. If we ever move back to the QCA, we will likely be living in the Dport School District (for many reasons... I know I cannot afford to live in Bettendorf no matter how nice it is there)... although in Dport I would be picky as to which particular schools I would send my own kids to Wink

  • Thanks for the feedback so far ladies.

hehlke09- Interested in what your friend thought of L & M and why she only stayed for one year out of curiosity.  :)  Thanks!

I would still love to hear from anyone else!
  • I agree with pp about Davenport being hit or miss.  It really just depends on the area.

I must say that I did not grow up in Davenport, so I didn't attend the schools here, but my husband did.  We were very particular about choosing the school our son attends and we know there are particular schools he will never attend.

Another thing to think about is your teaching certificate.  Are you certified to teach in Illinois?  (I don't know much about the boundaries or if there are any).  You mentioned Rockridge, which is on the IL side.  If you are willing to make that commute, you really do have more IL choices in the area.

I have cousins who attend Rockridge and while I think the school is decent, I would loathe that drive in the winter (mostly country roads and often the last to be cleared after it snows).  Being from CO, I'm sure you're used to the weather we get here in the QC, but it's still not fun to drive those hilly, winding roads when it's slick.  Just my 2 cents.

  • Thansk everyone!  Good point about the commute.  I think for now I will plan on applying to Muscatine, L & M, and Iowa City since I am 99% sure we will be living in Muscatine.  Everyone's feedback was very helpful so far!
  • Just lurking from the Des Moines board :o)  I grew up in the QC area and know a couple of people who teach music in Muscatine (and have for several years), and my BFF lived there.  I also taught at Highland Community Schools (in the towns of Ainsworth and Riverside), which isn't too far from there.  You will have some options, but it might be a little of a commute.  There are also some other smaller schools around there that you could apply to also.

    Good luck!!
