So last night Dh and I are laying in bed and we hear this gnawing sound coming from our kitchen. I had heard this same noise on Monday morning but quickly wrote it off as the ice machine (it's not a new refridge, so I figured that was just one of things older appliances have). Dh gets up to check it out and swears to me that it is NOT the ice machine. Every time we turn on the lights the sound goes away, so he gets back in bed. Of course, as his head hits the pillow we hear it again. He suggests maybe something gnawed its way in from the outside--except, I point out, 1. our house is brick, 2. the way our house is laid out, our kitchen is on the 2nd floor (and no squirrel/raccoon/possum I've ever seen has been able to scale brick walls!) He goes in, opens all the cabinets and none of the food we store has any signs of bite marks--and we've got enough food stuffs in there that if there WERE an animal living in one of our cabinets, surely there would be a sign.
Finally, he drags me out of bed to make sure he's not going crazy and we decide to see if we can "trick" whatever it is. So we only turn on the flashlight, keep it on but turn off the overhead lights and keep really quiet. We hear the gnawing sound again. But again, see no sign of anything. (We did notice a hole under our stove that I had never seen before, but it really just looked like a sloppy cut hole to connect the stove to electricity--it could have been there the entire time.)
I go back to bed, DH decides to check out the attic, see if anything may have fallen down between the walls. I hear him walking around up there, and then all of a sudden a loud crashing noise and then a "Hey Derky" coming from above that sounded a little too close for comfort. I go into the dining room to see DH up in the attic. Yes, he tripped off the walking boards and put his foot through the ceiling!! Ugh. Maybe I was a little too wishful in my thinking that the dining room could use a little extra light. ![]()
So, at the end of the day, we ended up with one foot-sized hole in the ceiling, 1 gnawing at-large critter, and 2 tired people.
Re: I've got a good story for you all!! Sorry, long
Nope, never did find that thing. And yes, my reaction was exactly what yours would have been.
what a night.
when we were young, my brother stuck his foot through my parents attic right after we had moved into our brand new house. needless to say, I don't think he's seen the inside of that attic since, he was banned.
Haha, what a night!
I bet the little critter was off in a corner laughing at you guys :P.
Derky - thats hilarious!! I mean I am so sorry you have a hole in your ceiling but I could see you guys being all quiet trying to figure out the noise. Thats too funny!
I did that once at my Mom's house trying to get some boxes down for Christmas and almost fell through the ceiling. There was this big @ss hole. I felt so bad about it I cried. And then we all laughed.
That's hilarious! I'd be ticked that I never found whatever is gnawing.
FYI, in our old apartment complex we had a probelm with mice. We lived on the third floor and they had no probelm getting up to us. Also the bottom floor was all grages and the walls were cinderblock. The mice came in through a giant, poorly cut hole behind our washer.
Oh my God. I am so sorry that happened, but man, is that funny. I'm just envisioning you walking in, lucking up, and seeing your DH's foot danging from the ceiling.
I hope you find that little rat bastard. Literally. lol
