Idiot question: So, while on BCP one still ovulates?

MinM <- Big, fat reproductive igmo.

Up until know, I just concentrated on not getting prego (and it worked). I don't know jack about catching the pregs (except the basic anatomical parts required).

  • No, it's supposed to prevent ovulation. If taken correctly, it's supposed to be 99% effective - so someone is that 1%, and they ovulate, and get pg.

Trust me, I know all about failure rates.

  • Bmom got it.

BCP's mimic the hormone levels of pregnancy, which shuts (in 99% of women) ovulation off. It also decreases development of the endometrium so that if you do ovulate (which happens more so with women who miss a pill or take it late) it is less likely a fertilized egg will be able to implant.

The only birth control I can say 100% of the time works as an abortificant is the Paragard IUD. It has no hormones, so ovulation continues as normal and it completely prevents implantation.
