Possibly relocating to Southern Cal - advice needed!

Hi Ladies,

My husband and I have been thinking about relocating from Atlanta to Southern Cal for awhile now and I was wondering if it really is as expensive as everyone says it is? My husband is an attorney and I am a marketing manager - both of us have jobs here in Atlanta and haven't started looking in Cali yet. We're really looking for a more low-key lifestyle, somewhere with a beach and great scenery (atlanta isn't so "pretty").

Do you like living in southern cal? Why or why not? And any info on typical home prices for a 3 or 4 bedroom, reasonably priced areas, job market, quality of life in Cali, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.

 Thank you!!

Jenn

Re: Possibly relocating to Southern Cal - advice needed!

  • To be honest- there really isnt a typical home price in San Diego county based solely on # of bedrooms.  There is a 4 bed house 2 blocks away from us that is on the market for $1,500,000 and we had a 3 bed house half a block away from us sell for $269,000.  Out here its based more on square footage and location.  The closer you are to the beach, the more the houses will cost.

As for lawyers---we have 1 lawyer for about every 10 people in the state--its a field that is not lacking for people.  Unless your husband specializes in a type of law that is hard to find good lawyers, he might not find something right away unless he goes into private practice.  Has he already taken the California Bar Exam?

Yes, it is an expensive as everyone says it is.  Gas is around $3.00 a gallon right now---lower in some parts of the county and as high as $3.40 a gallon in other parts.  Housing prices have come down quite a bit in past few years but they are still much higher than the majority of the US.  You might want to do a home search with your desired requirements to get an idea of what its going to cost.

  • the mr. & i have lived here a little over 2 years & really like it.  we'd been here on vacations & finally decided to make it permanent.

it's hard going from owning to renting, but i'd recommend it.  it'll give you & yh the chance to feel out the city & decide which area you'd want to buy a home.

  • My sister just moved back home (San Diego) from Acworth, GA.  She was considering buying a home out there before she moved back and she was making $10/hr at 40 hr a week.  Her friend's bought a house out there on a Kentucky Fried Chicken salary.  Out here, that salary will barely get you an apartment rental or maybe I should say room rental.  Granted, this is based on location, etc.  Things are expensive out here but you can find good deals.  Also, is it important to be on the beach or be a half hour from the beach??  These are things to consider and could definitely decrease the cost of living here.

I think the above post is right when they say to rent first and then buy.  You want to get use to all our areas before you make a decision.

Before you decide anything, definitely look into jobs.  Jobs are not easy to come by these days.  :(
