What should we do downtown?
H and I live in the suburbs and don't go downtown nearly as much as we'd like to. We have a free night at a hotel this weekend near the Mag Mile, and we're looking for ideas of where to eat and what to do.
He would like to go to the Shedd and Navy Pier, but I'm looking for some new ideas since we've done both of those things before.
Let me know if you have any suggestions! We'd like to keep dinner under $100, if possible. I'm looking at taking a taxi to Geja's Cafe because I love fondue, but if there's great places within walking distance, that's even beter.
Re: What should we do downtown?
I second the Hancock if you've never done that before, or if it's been a while.
Another thing that is fun is ice skating in Millenium Park under the bean. You could do that and then go get some hot chocolate somewhere.
Hi Kristen!
Glad to see you come down to the city! I live within walking distance from Millenium Park at least for a little while before I'm up your way. I think it would be fun to check out the ice skating rink down there and see the face fountains, Bean, etc. You could even walk 2 blocks west to State Street and pick up some Garrett's popcorn and take a picture of the two of you with the Chicago Theatre sign in the background.
If you like that area, one place I recommend is Atwood Cafe. It's on State Street (same street as the Chicago Theatre) and Washington. It's good for people watching and I believe they have nightly prix fixe menus that will be within your $100 budget for both of you. It's really nice inside, food is excellent.
Don't forget about the Chicago Originals, which is a group of 15 independent restaurants in the city and suburbs. They'll be celebrating their annual two-week Restaurant Week on January 18-31, with special 3-course menus for $29.10. Details of the promotion are on the Chicago Originals website here, and you can see a list of the restaurants in the group here.
Other things to see/do is the Modern Wing of the Art Institute - its gorgeous and definitely something you might want to check out if you haven't already.
Whatever you decide, have fun and can't wait to see you again soon!
My two faves for dinner would be Quartino (State/Ontario), or Purple Pig (MIchigan/Illinois). Both serve small/sharable plates and reasonably priced wines. (I would recommend looking online first though to see if the menus appeal to you.)
For things to do, I second (third?) the recos on skating at Millenium Park, and Hancock. Also, I love the Museum of Modern Art. I know it's kinda cold now, but as an idea for nicer weather, H and I bought this inexpensive little deck of cards from Borders called Chicago Walking tours. They're just suggested walking routes with little interest points along the way.
