Another retailer throwing stuff away (Borders)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mary-hall/borders-dumping-books-sto_b_421980.html

I remember someone posting about H&M tossing clothes.  Throwing away books is so ridiculous though!  They could donate them to so many different places - anything from charities to schools to prisons.

Re: Another retailer throwing stuff away (Borders)

  • GOOD GRIEF!  DH was *shocked* when I sent him the article about H&M, this is worse!  All those trees died to make those books, and Borders is throwing them in the trash! There should be huge fines for trashing things that could be donated.

  • Our local libraries have taken huge cuts thanks to state budget issues.  I'm sure donated books would be greatly appreciated, kthanx.  So many people or institutions would be thrilled to receive them, it's ridiculous they get tossed in the trash.
  • Every book seller does this.

I had to strip and trash books when I worked for a gas station.

Yup - from what I understand, probably for copyright reasons, this is standard practice for books that have just been on the shelves too long.  One would think they could at least do some recycling programs with these books.

A friend of mine had a ton of books w/ their covers missing - ones that should have been destroyed but were smuggled out.

  • This is weird, because I go to the second hand bookstore and there are always tons of books that clearly came from another bookstore. You can tell by the way they are marked. So some bookstores must be not throwing things away.
  • That really is awful...too bad they couldn't follow after Barnes & Noble.  I was in B&N today and they had a huge section of "publisher's extras" for sale - most books were up to 75% off.  I had a gift certificate and got 3 brand new, hardcovers for $18!!  I think it is so horrible that places throw extra stuff away.  There should be some regulations around this.

  • I worked in a bookstore where we had to destroy Bibles instead of donating them.  I refused. It's blasphemous.  And Bibles weren't the only things, either.  They destroyed all kinds of books.

I contacted our corporate and protested it.  It's disgusting and wasteful!

This whole thing is just disgusting, but ESPECIALLY this!  No one should be made to destroy Bibles (or ANY other religious books or documents)!  That's so, so, so wrong on SO many levels.

Destroying books in general is just horrible.  Can't they sell them back to the publisher for redistribution or recycling?

Most of ours occurred when things were 'damaged', like if the cover was scratched, or if the title page was torn....things like that.  The inside of the book was completely usable.  We wrote it off as damaged.  Then we were supposed to take giant black permanant markers and box cutters and make sure that EVERY SINGLE PAGE was unusable so someone couldn't dumpster dive.  So didn't have the same amount as an entire store's inventory, but we had more than you'd think.

Few times in my life have I ever just put my foot down and said, "No.  I won't do it.  Fire me if you have to."  This was one of them.

  • I understand "spring cleaning" a little more than when the store closes and I'm guessing they dump a whole lot more than just cleaning out the real ratty books.  I hope public outcry gets them thinking about donating or at least recycling!

the publisher's extras aren't extra copies of books they ordered... the publishers actually send them the extras and tell them the price to sell them for.

Generally it's trade paperbacks that get stripped. Or magazines. It costs too much money to ship them back to the publisher- more than the books are worth. So they destroy them instead, and send just the covers to the publisher. It's due to copyright law. They aren't allowed to donate the books, and anybody caught sneaking them out could get in BIG trouble.

Borders gets paid back for all the covers they mail to the publisher. If they just decided, "Hey, lets sell them all for 75% off" they would lose money and quickly be out of business. They aren't doing so hot now anyway.

Good for you!  I had to do that when I was waiting tables and a veeryyy pregnant women wanted a cocktail Indifferent.  I told my manager and he was like, "it's the law, you have to serve her."  I replied "No I don't.  I refuse to contribute to the possible death of a child.  I won't do it."
