Cell phone companies

The Blackberry posts make me think you ladies are just the help I've been needing!

I do not have a cell phone.  I have pay-per-minute phone that I used for our AHR rsvps and I don't even know where it is.  DH has a cell, we have Sprint.  Our contract ended and I am thinking of going into business for myself so I am going to have to breakdown and get myself a cell phone.

He uses less than 700 minutes/ month...no frills.  I want a family plan - just he and I.  I will probably need internet/ email capabilities.

I've been shopping around for the past few days and I think that Sprint might have the best deals, but I'm not sure...who is your provider?  I guess I should ask...and do you recommend your provider?

Thanks so much!

Re: Cell phone companies

  • I have verizon and LOVE them.  We've had them for about 4 years now and I had them for a few years before that too.  My moms had verizon for probably close to 10 years now.  I've had nextel, and us cellular, DH has had T Mobile and Cricket and we both will never have anything but Verizon ever again.  The coverage is amazing, I've traveled all over the country (and to Jamacia) and never had a dropped call or bad reception.  And their customer service is top notch.  They have always been pleasant and helpful.  When my first BB died, I had a one new on my doorstep in less then 24 hours, plus they gave me a loaner phone.  My friends that have had AT&T have all switched to verizon and love it.
  • I have been with Sprint for about 13 years and have never had a problem.  I have had good service all over the country (including Hawaii) and they also gave me a loaner phone when I had some issues with a phone (phone issue, not a Sprint issue).  DH has also been with them for just as long and we both have no complaints!
  • I have Verizon as well. I had Cingular (a long time ago) and hated them. I haven't had any problems with verizon other than with specific phones, DH and I have a family plan and it works well.

  • I have Verizon also.  Verizon is the only provider that that works at my house.  I also had AT&T, I liked them too.  I don't have internet on my phone because their plans are expensive and I am cheap.  But coverage is amazing and I rarely have dropped calls.
  • DH & I both used to be with Verizon but they were just too expensive, so we switched to Sprint and are very happy. We have the same coverage/services/frills as we did with Verizon, but we're saving about $60/mo by having Sprint.
  • I just recently switched from Verizon to At&t.  No reason other than I wanted an iphone.  I was very happy with Verizon and I'm very happy with at&t.  My aunt has t mobil and hates it and yet doesn't switch...weird.  I wish nextel was still around...it turned to poop when sprint bought them out.

I think it's best to figure out about what kind of phone you are looking for first and then narrow down what provider after.

  • I have verizon and LOVE them as well.  I'm not sure how much my monthly plan is though because my work pays for it.

I will say verizon has great customer service and a great network!

  • I've had Cingular/AT&T for 10 years and don't have any complaints.  I'm sure they're not the cheapest and people often complain about the service, but in my area, that's not a problem.

  • Sprint for 10 years with no compliants. DH has Verizon and likes it. I'm not sure how the price compares because work pays for his.
  • So I'm going to be the oddball here.  I had Verizon for years and I HATED them!  I finally ended up paying to get out of my contract with them.  I had dropped calls all the time, but that wasn't even what pushed me over the edge.  Their customer service is the worst I have EVER dealt with.  They constantly gave me the runaround and no one seemed to know what they were doing.  My DH has had a ton of problems with them too.  He's a pilot and has issues with his coverage a lot and lots of dropped calls.  I switched to Alltel a few years ago and loved them but then they were bought by Verizon.  But I did find out that my phone is going to actually be AT&T due to them not wanting Verizon to own to much so I'm thrilled about that.  I had Sprint for a long time and the only reason I switched was because my mom put me on her family share plan with Verizon. The only issue I have with Sprint is that they (at least a few years ago) had NO service at all in the entire state of Wyoming.   I would go back to Sprint, but never Verizon.

  • I had AT&T for years and had no problems until I met and then later moved in with DH. Coverage was bad at the house and I had to go to the front of our house or even the front yard to send text messages. Last summer, I switched to Verizon when my contract was up and have the plan with the lowest number of minutes since DH has Verizon through his work and my friends and most of my family do too. I also have a Nextel for my work cell phone and have no issues with it either.
  • I have been w/ Sprint for 10+ years & absolutely love them--obviously, I do recommend them  Big Smile

Keep in mind, if you are going to be self employed your cell phone plan may be eligible for tax write off!!  I don't know if it's possible for you to have a family plan & still have the tax benefit?!

  • I've been with Verizon for the past 11 years and have never had a problem. They have great coverage and I got a discount for working at my last job (they don't know i don't work there anymore though Wink)

  • You ladies are just awesome!  Thank you so much for all of the feedback!  And I was planning on the cell being a tax writeoff...I didn't even think about how that will work if I do it as a family plan.  I'm so glad that was mentioned so I can look into that too.

    Thanks again!
