Favourite Books?

Since E was born, I have become a born-again reader. When I was younger I always had a book in my hand, once I hit university that stopped. I blame being an English major.

Anyway, breast feeding has forced me to take time to be mellow and read again. In the last two months I've read "The Amateur Marriage", "Push", "Middlesex" and "The Lovely Bones". And I am looking forward to reading "The Book of Negroes" and "Three Day Road".

I am looking for ideas for books to read. I'm not really into mysteries or romantic novels, I do like things that are about relationships and families. I have been out of the loop for too long.

I've just gotten into reading again since the fall and I'm really enjoying it again.

I'm reading a really great book now called "The Slap".  It's Australian, and the language is a little blunt at times, but it's got a very interesting style and a good story.

I am reading The Memory Keepers Daughter right now (not while BF'ing because Ben only eats for under 5 minutes - le sigh).

Oh the book of Negros is really good on so many levels! It really provides a history lesson on Slavery and what people had to do to overcome it. My TOP suggestions is Ken Folletts, "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End" Both are around a 1000 pages. World Without End is the sequel to Pillars of the Earth. It takes place a long long time ago and basically you see babies grow up and have babies and all the obstacles that they have to overcome. Its a bit of everything. A family story, love story, history, etc. The characters are so in depth and you become so attached to them. I would say it does take a person awhile to get into the first novel but once your in a 4 or 5 chapters your hooked. I wish he would write more of them.

I also read a lot of books while breastfeeding.  I suggest anything by Wally Lamb, I Know this Much is True, She's Come Undone, The Hour I First Believed.  These books are very focused on families and relationships.

Last year I read "When I was Young and in my Prime" and loved it. ?The first bit was hard to adjust to the format, but it was an amazing read about a woman struggling with the declining health of her grandparents. ?It was really touching.

I loved "The Birth House" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society".

My sister highly recommends "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie".  She's bought it for a couple of people as gifts and they've enjoyed it too.
