WTH?

Why is it that when I call my doctor to make an appointment for something that's causing me a lot of pain, I can't get an appointment until JUNE 4th?!?!?!

I injured my knee and on Wednesday went to see my friend who is a doctor and was told I have a meniscus injury.  Yesterday the pain got much worse, icing and Motrin 800 weren't helping so I called my regular doctor this morning and got the wonderful news that he's booked.  I am going to see the nurse practitioner on Monday so I can't complain too much but seriously, JUNE 4th? Confused

Re: WTH?

  • Wow, that's ridiculous. I'm glad you were able to get into see the nurse b/c otherwise, it might be time to get a new doctor.
  • Does your doctor see primarily older patients? I worked for an internal med doctor who had mostly geriatric patients, and it was very difficult to get impromptu appointments b/c his schedule was filled with people who had standing appointments - every week, two weeks, month, etc. I know that other doctors at the same clinic had more open schedules. I agree, it's very frustrating. I hated having to send people with non-emergency but real problems to the urgent care clinic when we didn't have appointments open. (Of course, I also had people call who needed to go to the ER - like, the guy who had been having chest pains for hours, and the woman who was "pretty sure" her arm was broken.)

  • This will be my first time seeing this doctor, DW got new insurance and this is the first thing that came up that needs medical attention.

I told the receptionist to give me an appointment with the first doctor that had an available appointment and she said they can't select my doctor.  I chose the doctor that had a good educational background and has a special interest in preventative medicine.  I'm going to talk to the NP on Monday and see what info she can give me on the other doctors.
