Why is it that when I call my doctor to make an appointment for something that's causing me a lot of pain, I can't get an appointment until JUNE 4th?!?!?!

I injured my knee and on Wednesday went to see my friend who is a doctor and was told I have a meniscus injury.  Yesterday the pain got much worse, icing and Motrin 800 weren't helping so I called my regular doctor this morning and got the wonderful news that he's booked.  I am going to see the nurse practitioner on Monday so I can't complain too much but seriously, JUNE 4th?

Wow, that's ridiculous. I'm glad you were able to get into see the nurse b/c otherwise, it might be time to get a new doctor.

Does your doctor see primarily older patients? I worked for an internal med doctor who had mostly geriatric patients, and it was very difficult to get impromptu appointments b/c his schedule was filled with people who had standing appointments - every week, two weeks, month, etc. I know that other doctors at the same clinic had more open schedules. I agree, it's very frustrating. I hated having to send people with non-emergency but real problems to the urgent care clinic when we didn't have appointments open. (Of course, I also had people call who needed to go to the ER - like, the guy who had been having chest pains for hours, and the woman who was "pretty sure" her arm was broken.)

This will be my first time seeing this doctor, DW got new insurance and this is the first thing that came up that needs medical attention.

I told the receptionist to give me an appointment with the first doctor that had an available appointment and she said they can't select my doctor.  I chose the doctor that had a good educational background and has a special interest in preventative medicine.  I'm going to talk to the NP on Monday and see what info she can give me on the other doctors.
