Eco-friendly carpeting

Any suggestions? We're looking at replacing the carpeting in most of the house this spring.  I'd like something that doesn't off-gas like a mofo.

I'm pretty certain we're going to do one room with FLOR, but would like other options for hallways and our living room.

We have 2 crazy dogs (obviously) who prefer to zoom and wrassle in our family room and frequently host large gatherings, so wear and tear are a concern.

Re: Eco-friendly carpeting

  • I love FLOR. I'm not sure what else is available out there but I'd love to hear about others.

  • I believe you can get carpet that is made from recycled materials. I can not for the life of me remember who makes it (it is one of the major brands). I am in Canada so I don't know if it is just up here or available in the US as well.
  • Do you want to replace it with carpet or are you open to wood or other flooring?

I've seen samples of Earth Weave and  Nature's Carpet.  Both have no or very low off gassing but I'm not sure what the cost is like.  There weren't prices of the samples and that can never be a good thing, right?

  • Careful about carpet with recycled coke bottles. It was ok for a few years but now if there is a stain not even Stanley Steamer can get it out.
  • We installed some carpet from Carpet Exchange made out of corn product, and are really happy with it so far (about 1/5 years in).  It was instantly soft, and didn't really smell at all.  At the time we bought it, it was on sale, so it wasn't much more than the stinky stuff.
