bikram yoga?

My sister has been RAVING about Bikram Yoga, and I found a studio near me with good reviews, so I was thinking about trying it out. Does anyone have experience with hot yoga?

The studio website said for women to wear stretchy shorts and a sports bra... butttt my abs aren't quite ready for prime time. Could I wear a tshirt too or will I be totally out of place? Also, how much water should I bring? I drink 24 oz during a normal (not 105 degree!) workout!

Re: bikram yoga?

  • I've never taken a class but I did speak with a studio a while back about trying classes (ended up being too far away for me to follow through).  They told me to drink about double what I would during a normal work out BEFORE class.  Then bring water to drink during class as well!

Let us know how you like it!

  • I have never taken it either but I am guessing they say sports bra just because of the heat factor. could you get one of those work out tank tops that comes longer like this http://tiny.cc/AggZY that way you won't be making yourself hotter but you won't be just in a bra.
  • I love bikram! I went for 2 years straight religiously when I lived in FL. You are so much more flexible and its amazing what your body can do under heat. I drank ALOT of water starting off so I'd bring extra and it is very intense. The reason they don't want you wearing alot of clothes is actually because the sweat on your bare skin cools you off when you take a break between poses where as if you wear a t-shirt it soaks the sweat up and then the sweat isn't on your skin to cool you down. I know it sounds sort of gross but it works. Also make sure you bring a towel to go over your normal yoga mat to start off mine would get so wet that i'd be sliding around on it trying to do the poses the towel helped absorb some of it until your body gets adjusted. HTH! And give it a couple weeks for your body to adjust to the heat because the first session will be soo hot but your body will adjust.

  • I've never tried bikram, but I really want to!  My coworker is planning to open a bikram studio in a few weeks.  I can't wait to give it a try when she does open.

  • Definitely fun.  If you are not ready to bare all, there are some shirts that would work (look in department stores, etc--I have some great ones from Marshalls!).

I may have overkilled but I brought a liter of water (and kept a frozen bottle in the trunk that melted while I was in class and OMG it was so wonderful after).

While I liked that class, I did not stick with it because it really wasn't my type of yoga.  Its just boring old hatha/ashtanga yoga for me now.
