totally overwhelmed

Build or buy an existing home?

Worried about the price on building (with a builder, in a new-home community, not on our own) skyrocketing out of control.  Don't want to get screwed. can't find anything bad about the builder, which also irrationally worries me.  A on BBB website, no negative comments found except for a former agent for the builder who "got screwed" out of a commission (whatever).  What if we build it and hate it?!?!

Tired of looking at existing homes and not finding exactly what we want--ie, love the house but would have to redo the kitchen; love the house but hate the master bath.  These costs add up.  Existing homes come with problems with plumbing, foundation, etc.

We want to find someplace to stay forever, and I am so afraid of making the wrong decision.  Words of wisdom? Advice? How in the world did you do this!?!?

Re: totally overwhelmed

  • Right now we're going with a builder. We won't be building for a couple of years, but they have 2 or 3 more phases. We were looking at a national builder who is building lots of plans in our area. But they didn't let us change things like I would like. For instance they could put a bay window on the sides and back of the house, but not on the front where I would want it. So I talk to one of my co-workers husband who is a contractor and he recommended a local builder whom we love. We were like you and had the same concerns. Especially after watching HGTV I would be scared to remodel and see what's really wrong with the house. If you do decide to go with a builder, maybe look at local builders. Our future builder has features that we would have to pay extra for with the national builder as standard features. Good luck
  • Our choices were easily narrowed down when we found our forever neighborhood.

  • You're talking about buying a home for the next 60-70 years.  Heck yeah, there's pressure.

Here's my advice: don't plan on being in this house til you die.  You can't tell the future (do you really think there would be 3 homes, going on 4, in my bio if we mere mortals could tell the future?  we don't plan on moving every 2 years).  Unless you're a farmer tied to land, you have no idea if there are going to be jobs where you are in the future, if you're going to hit 40 and declare that you want something new, if you're going to want to move somewhere warmer/colder/closer or further from family, if the neighborhood's gonna turn into a haven for drug dealers, the list goes on.

Give yourself permission to choose a home that you think can meet your needs for 10 years, longer if necessary, but not required.  Reexamine in 2020.

  • I don't have words of advice, just reassurance that you are not alone. We're looking at houses and I feel overwhelmed with anxiety, while my fiance is full of excitement and confidence. Your in my thoughts. :/
