Favorite cleaning brands?

What are you favorite cleaning brands? We are moving into our first house soon and I would like to make the change to more environmentally friendly products.I would prefer to not bring any harsh or toxic chemicals into our new home, but that doesn't give me much time to figure it out. Any information is appreciated!

*I apologize in advance if this has been discussed, but my search didn't come up with anything*

Re: Favorite cleaning brands?

  • I make some of my own, but buy some from seventh generation and method. I also buy from melaleuca. com

  • Right now I use Shaklee products as that's what I grew up with and just got some of my own when I left home.  They are great and last forever as they come super concentrated.  Once I run out though I'll probably make more of my own stuff.

I do make my own laundry detergent and love it!  For dish soap I use 7th generation.  I'm hoping to make my own dish washer detergent at some point.  A lot of the gals on here use vinegar for many different things.  You can check out this blog for a lot of different recipes.  I've tried a few and they're all great!  Good luck!

  • i recently started using country save laundry detergent.  mostly for my cloth diapers, because i still have some kirkland signature detergent to use up.  It seems like it would last for quite a while.

i use vinegar and water to clean most stuff.  i need to wean myself off of comet and use baking soda instead but i'm not quite there yet.  you might try reposting this on the eco friendly family board (on the bump) because a lot of the girls there have recs and recipes for making your own.

  • I just do a lot of vinegar and dishsoap. No brand required.

I also like the watkins line of cleaning products. Laundry detergent especially.

  • Laundry detergent: Crunchy Clean (www.crunchyclean.com - also available on etsy)

Cleaners & Dish soap: 7th Generation

Hand soap: I make my own using water and Dr Bonner's

Bath Soap - Ordered on etsy from Ross Soap

Bath Cleaner - I wanted the 7th Gen, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I got the Method.  Not sure I like it as much - it works, but still smells chemical-like.

The only thing I'm not 100% in love with is the dishwasher stuff.  We use the 7th Gen Liquid and Method Tabs.  I'm not happy with either.  Of course, I like to partially blame my dishwasher also - it sucks.

  • We have been making our own household cleaners from differing combinations of baking soda, salt, vinegar, dr. bronner's and eo. That has gone very well, better than I ever expected. It smells good, is non-toxic, and I actually feel like it mostly does a better job than what I was using before. I am not thrilled with the glass cleanser I made. But I use microfiber cloths and they work pretty much without cleanser. Everything else I have made I have liked better than what I was using before.

For laundry detergent, I use costco EF detergent. Not sure how EF it really is, but I like it. For hand soap and liquid dish soap we use method. Dishwasher soap has been a problem. The only one I haven't absolutely hated is Ecover, but it is hard to find as I refuse to buy the tablets because they are ridiculously expensive. I found the powder once only. So I am back to cascade, which is not EF, yet my dishes are spotless. So I am still working on that one.

  • Thank you all for your recommendations. I went and bought some seventh generation cleaners to get me started. I am hoping to try out some of the other brands as well and even some of the recipes once we settle into the house.
  • My favorite all purpose cleaner is our Charlie's Soap--there are few things that it doesn't clean easily.  They also make laundry detergent which I also swear by.  www.charliesoap.com It's local for me, though, so that's another reason I buy it.

  • Besides my homemade stuff, Biokleen is my favorite company for cleaning products.
  • I've been really happy with 7th generation soaps (detergents, dish soap, etc.) and love Mrs. Meyers countertop cleaners. Trader Joes  French Liquid Hand Soap for hand soaps...
