Visiting San Diego next week, advice?

DH and I will be in San Diego the 9th-14th for his work convention. We are staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt (I think that's what it's called?). Neither one of us have been to San Diego before.

I will have the mornings/early afternoons to myself to relax, wander and explore. DH will be available in the late afternoons and evenings. Any recommendations on what to do, where to eat, places to go/not go? We will not have a rental car, so I need suggestions that are in walking distance or easy to get to via taxi or other public transportation.

Kind of a silly question, but what should I pack?? We're coming from frigid northern MN where I wear very casual (jeans and sweaters/fleece) clothes everyday. I checked the extended forecast and it looks like low to mid 60s so far. I am clueless when it comes to packing for other climates, lol.

Thanks ladies!

  • Def bring layers - it's chilly but warm in the sun.

You will be downtown which is awesome! (I live downtown!) There is a trolley that can take you to Old town and a few other places. You can walk to Seaport Village which has cute shops & is right on the water. There is also little italy & gaslamp.

Have a great time!! Enjoy your trip!

  • From the Hyatt you can easily walk to SeaPort Village...it's right behind the hotel. It's basically a touristy area of gift shops, art galleries, restaurants, etc. But it will be perfect for a morning of walking. It's right on the water so you can enjoy the views. Walk north along the water and you'll run into the Midway Museum (an old Navy ship). It's worth a visit.

You can also walk into downtown. From the hotel you'll be in safe areas to walk. Horton Plaza is the major mall (ask the hotel how to get there) but it's basically up 1st or 2nd Street. You'll run right into it. Lots of shops, movie theatre, etc.

The Gaslamp District is the area between Broadway and Market (N&S) and 4th and 7th (E&W). It's full of restaurants, nightlife, boutique shops, etc. Go here for dinner and pick any place that looks good. There is a wide range of food and atmosphere.

You can also take a ferry ride to Coronado and see the shops there. Hotel Del is worth a visit and you can get there by taxi. Have dinner or drinks there. Lots of history.

The trolley can take you to Little Italy---restaurants, cafes. It can also take you to Old Town. Old Town is worth a visit. There are shops, historic buildings/museums and restaurants.

A taxi ride to Balboa Park during the day is a great option. There are tons of museums (Art, Photography, History, etc.). A nice restaurant there is the Prado (good happy hour and apps in the bar area). This is my favorite part of downtown and how I'd spend a morning/afternoon.

The zoo is right next to Balboa Park too.

There are also Harbor Cruises that take you on 3 hour rides in the bay, or dinner cruises as well. Ask the hotel for a good company to go with.

Bring layers. San Diego is casual. Jeans are fine. If you're walking and it's sunny you'll be OK in a t-shirt. Once you sit you'll need a sweater. I don't think you'll need a coat, especially if you're used to really cold weather. It'll probably feel warm here. But don't be surprised to hear locals talking about how freezing it is at 65 degrees!
