BR: How many crib sheets?

I was wondering...does the baby get the crib sheets dirty often? I'm just thinking with all the poop/pee they're doing (and how often do you change them overnight?) something is bound to accidentally escape the diaper and get on the sheets? And if so, how often do you change the sheets and how many do you want to have on hand? TIA!

Re: BR: How many crib sheets?

  • I was wondering this same thing! I was thinking 3-4 so that one could be in the wash, one could get dirty, one clean one for the crib and still have one to spare.

Let's hear from the experienced mama's though!

  • I've read only 2 to start out with, but I'm neurotic so I'll probably want more than that (I'm thinking at least 3 per baby). Stick out tongue
  • My LO doesn't use the crib as often as she should Embarrassed -- but we have 2 and haven't needed to get any more. No poop accidents in the crib so far. I've been wanting to get a couple of plain white crib sheets for back up though. I like that the white sheets can be bleached if they get stained.
  • I think I have 3? But I only had 2 (jersey cotton) at first and then just got a third one because it's a fleece sheet to keep her warm and I got it at a consignment store for $8. Maybe I have a couple more in regular cotton, come to think of it... but if I do I haven't used them. Maybe when it gets warmer I'd use them. I don't think you need more than 2 or maybe 3.

I don't change the sheets much because she has not had any accidents. The only time I've need to change them (I think I've changed them twice?) was when she spit up a lot. Maybe I should change them every week? But she sleeps in her sleep sack so they don't really get dirty.

You can also look into the Ultimate Crib Sheet, which is a sheet with plastic on the bottom that you can put on top and snap in place. We used that at first and I only took it off because the jersey cotton of the sheet is warmer.

Re changing diapers, most books say not to change them in the middle of the night unless they are 1) poop or 2) leaking through. That's because changing the diaper wakes them up and you want them to SLEEP.

In the beginning, I changed her a lot because she was going a lot, even at night. Now that she does not go #2 very often (as is common with bfed babies) I never change her at night. She'll go from 8p to 7a with the same diaper. Use one size larger for nights or they will leak tho. When she gets up at 7a, I change her diaper, then take her to bed with me for her morning gobble. :-)

    HTH!

  • At first we only had a couple.  Now I have like 5 on hand.  Anything and everything can happen so it's nice to have a few extra clean ones on board. Especially vomit.    My biggest mistake though, was buying ones that looked cute but didn't fit properly.  The best ones have the elastic all around the sheet.  This way, you're not tugging and pulling = ripping the sheets like I did.  Cute ones usually mean cheap quality, which made me so mad!   I found nice white, blue, greens that were decent quality and fit properly.
  • I have 5, but 3 is good.  I usually change the sheets at least once/week.
  • I have 4, but I never needed more than 2. 2 of my regular cotton sheets are 400 thread count and one is not, so I never use that one. The other is velour and all soft and fuzzy, so I only use that one in the winter (and only now that DS is older). I think 2 is sufficient (just make sure you get high quality/soft ones).
  • I have 3 for the crib and 3 for the co-sleeper for exactly the reason Julie stated.  We also have a waterproof cover on the mattress in the crib and are using a plastic lined flannel "lap pad" on top, where she lies (same on the changing pad and co-sleeper).

  • Thanks for all your responses! Yeah, I was thinking about just getting other items of a bedding set for decor purposes and save money on the crib sheets by just getting ones that could go with it but aren't made for the set since they may just get dirty and changed all the time and I can't justify spending buying 2-5 of the crib sheets from the set at $30/sheet...or even getting just one if it's only going to be used 1/5 of the time or something.
