newbie with questions

Hi!  I'm a newbie to the area and the nest and wanted to introduce myself and also ask for some advice and help!

DH and I recently moved here from the east coast and we're currently looking for jobs in the area.  I just found out that I'm pregnant and we have yet to find doctors out here...not to mention we don't have insurance right now.

Soo...does anyone have any idea what to do about getting insurance?  And once we take care of that, can anyone recommend their OBGYN that they love?

Re: newbie with questions

  • Congrats! I am not good with insurance stuff but I HIGHLY recommend my OB. Dr Linzey and he's one of the best OBs in Orange County  714-835-8715. He's also a high risk OB so god forbid there are any complications, he's your guy. I just had my baby 12 days ago and he watched over me like a hawk throughout my pregnancy because I have a bicornuate uterus (which means I could have had a preterm baby). Anyway, he rocks.

Best of luck with everything. I am sure there are girls here that can help in that arena!  Also you might want to check out the OC Bump boards for more referrals and advice about the insurance. :)

  • Congrats on your new arrival!  Thanks so much with the recommendation.
  • I would find an individual insurance plan ASAP. I'm on my old company's COBRA because insurance companies considered my pregnancy a pre-existing condition. I've heard that is illegal but it's still a hassle and you are early enough that I wouldn't even mention the pregnancy when you call for a quote.

Pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition on group policies ONLY -- individual policies can (and do) exclude pregnant as a pre-existing, as HIPPA does not cover individual policies. It is not worth it to lie as they will do the math and revoke your policy in full when they realize you lied on your application. My individual policy last year was cancelled because I could have conceived within 15 days of my effective date, thus making me pregnant at the time of application and start date.

OP ? look into AIM: http://www.aim.ca.gov/Home/default.aspx & Medical. If you are considered low-risk, another option would be to go out-of-pocket with a midwife. Ameriplan is another option but isn't considered "insurance": http://www.pregnancyinsurance.org/ameriplan.
