(New to STL) where is......

a good animal shelter that would take in an elderly cat? I would prefer a non kill shelter if there is one.

Or even a nursing home that would want a "house pet" for all the residents to enjoy?

    About Our Shelter
Founded in 2000, Country Acres Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, St. Louis based organization who's primary concern lies with the over population and unnecessary suffering of domestic animals in our community. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, socialization and placement of homeless, abandoned and abused/neglected cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies. At our West County shelter, we provide a safe, secure, and healthy environment to pets waiting for loving and caring adoptive homes. In addition, we are committed to promoting better care and understanding of animals through education with an emphasis on the importance of spaying and neutering. Country Acres Rescue does not euthanize, unless a serious medical or behavioral problem exists. Country Acres Rescue receives no government funding. We are entirely dependent on adoption fees and charitable donations from people like you.
  • The St. Charles Humane Society is also a no kill shelter...

  • hate to be rude, but an elderly cat in a shelter has a slim chance of finding a home.

why can't it live the rest of its life in its current environment?

  • First off welcome to st louis, but there should be no reason you need to get rid of an elderly cat.  An old animal has little to no chance of being adopted even at a no kill facility.  It worked at country acres when they first started their cat adoption.  They had 2, 3 year old cats and it took them OVER a YEAR (yes, a year) to get adopted.  If you are moving into an appartment, that doesn't take animals, find one that does.  If you moved into a house with a relative than find somebody to foster you cat until you find permanent residence.  If you are pregnant the cat will not eat your baby, give your toxoplasmisis or suffocate anybody, if you have a new BF that is allergic, maybe you had better have thought about that before moving.  Nothing is a bigger pet peeve of mine than to hear somebody is moving and NEEDS to get rid of their pet.  There are VERY few circumstances that REQUIRE somebody to give away ther pet, very few.

If you are dead set on giving your cat away, go to www.petfinder.com and search for rescues in your area.  Call around to them to find out IF they have a opening to accept ANOTHER cat and if they are no kill.  There are plenty on no kill shelters.  DO NOT take him or her to the Humane Society or the APA.  Despite popular belief they are kill shelters.  (I intervied at the St. Charles location)
