Help! Life Insurance and Legal Questions

I posted these questions within my TT post, but then decided I really would like all of your advice.

1. We met with Primerica reps and were give info on life insurance. That prompted comparison shopping and this week I've been looking for quotes. What are average/good rates for both term and whole life? For those of you that have insurance how did you decide on factors such as company, amount, length, etc?

2. Lawyers and legal stuff. Where do I find a good lawyer that won't cost a small fortune?! We need someone that can do a real estate transfer and basic wills.  I was quoted $800 as a retainer. Is that average? Any advice?

(We have friends in law school right now, one of which is going into family law. Hopefully, once we have the babies she can do our revised wills and second-parent adoption.)

Re: Help! Life Insurance and Legal Questions

  • no info on #1 (we both have good life insurance policies through our employers)

as for #2, an $800 retainer sounds pretty fair, as long as little to no additional $ would be due. We shopped around a lot for someone to do basic wills, power of attorney, and healthcare proxy documents and most quoted $300-$500 per person. Of course, legal costs are very much area-specific.  If you are expecting your will to be fairly basic, i might recommend legalzoom.com.  Its 100% legit, the only downside is that you dont have an attorney making sure its perfectly tailored to your situation.  I think this is the way we're going to go until we do our second-parent adoptions since the savings is so substantial.

  • oh, and i also wanted to mention that if you decide to retain an attorney for wills now, you should try and negotiate a good deal for when you sell/buy homes next summer.  attorney's fee's are negotiable, it never hurts to ask if they have flexiblity in their rates.
