PCP/TTC Wednesday

News? Updates? Etc, etc?

QOTD: Grandparents! This is a two-parter -
a) Are your parents anxious to be grandparents?
b) Do you anticipate some clashing with regard to parenting style? (i.e. your mom likes to "baby" and "spoil" while you want the world's most independent kids, etc, etc)

Re: PCP/TTC Wednesday

  • No news here, but I'll answer the questions anyway.

    QOTD:
    a) Are your parents anxious to be grandparents?
Yes and no.  I think secretly they are, but they wouldn't dare say anything.  My dad is older (in his 70s) and it's really important to me that he meet his grandchild.  My parents will just wait to see what happens, although I do think my mom would be really sad if we were still living in NY when we have our kids.

    b) Do you anticipate some clashing with regard to parenting style?  I think my parents will be okay, but K's mom will drive me nuts!  She already drives me nuts with the way she interacts with her great-grand children.  She definitely won't be keeping the kid for long weeks or unsupervisored visits, and K and I agree on that.  On the other hand I think K's dad will have a blast spoiling the kids but not in an over the top way.

  • I actually have PCP news this time: We have sperm money. :-O

C just accepted a new job (which she's really excited about!), and we were quite pleasantly surprised that the offer included a sign-on bonus.  We have decided to put the $ in its own bank account as "Seed Money" (ha! what a bad pun...).

This is such a wonderful stroke of luck during our summer of spending, and brings extra relief with our recent unexpected expenses (the couch disassembling and C's car accident).  When C told me about the bonus and suggested we use it in this way, I teared up - I can't believe our baby-making money will be in the bank in a matter of weeks.  It just makes it seem so much more tangible that we really are going to start TTC soon.

Still more on the PCP to-do list, of course.  We need to pay off the CC from all our crazy summer expenses, and we want to build up the house account some more.  On target for starting TTC next summer!

  • QOTD

    a) C's parents are READY. We know they will be nothing but thrilled! My parents...are young.  They had me when they were quite young, and I'm in my twenties, so that makes them rather young to be grandparents.  I know they'll be happy for us when it happens, though.

    b) Not with C's parents. With mine - I'll just say that out of the four there are 2 that we worry about, one of which that we really worry about....  One of my parents has a very different view of parenting than we do, so we know at the very least, some tension will be caused!

  • a) Yes....C's, I'm not sure

    b) Maybe...my parents are uber protective, and C's parents think she is 15 and incompetent....

  • well we are still on the search for a donor. The two we really like only have ART vials and I got word that they just won't work with IUI.  Bummer.  I am going to make an appointment with the insem. place for a first appointment.  I have been temping for two months and I think I am going to be starting with opks next month.  I am very curious to see how they match up to my temp charts.

    as for the qotd

    a) my parents are so ready to be grandparents for the first time.  S's parents are already grandparents three times over so I don't think they are as anxious but I am sure they will be excited.

b)I am not worried at all about the grandparenting style at all on both sides.  My mom is a montesorri teacher so I know all about her style and will def. pattern my style after her no nonsense app.  my mil is amazing with the other grandchildren.  she def has her rules (which I love) but is so loving to them.  As for the grandpas I am sure they will spoil them a bit but isnt that their job?

  • Congrats to C on the new job! super exciting :):)

Yesterday we met w/ our apartment manager for our move out inspection and got to chatting about the new house. Andrea jokingly mentioned that we wished we coudl take him wiht us to the new house (he's super handy, reliable, and has been quick to repair every single little thing at the apt).  Well, it turns out, he does private contracting on the side!  So last night he measured all of our windows and took a look at our leaking shower.  The price he quoted us for replacement windows was thousands less than other quotes we've gotten. We were thrilled!! plus, he's the one that replaced the windows at the apartment about a year ago so we know from experience that he does good work.
Windows should be completed by the end of september and we're (tenatively) slated for a TTC start of March '09.

In releated news, we're inching forward on the foster parent front - two days ago we recieved the big info packet and paged through it very carefully. My favorite part? Throughout the brochures and info there were pictures of "traditional" families, same sex families, and single parents - it felt very welcoming :)  We're planning to officially start the certification program in September (only 2 months!).

    QOTD  - grandparents:

    a) On my side, yes, big time! my mom has been bugging us about starting a familiy for years - well before we were even engaged. She's absolutely thrilled that we're starting soon and drops not-at-all subtle hints constantly.  On A's side its only her dad who hasn't ever even mentioned it.  I'm sure if her mom were still around, she would be super excited.

    b) Not really. Which is shocking because my mom and i clash on everything. But, she's been a nanny and pre-school teacher for years so i know this is her strong suit. Theres a good chance she'll be the caregiver while A and I are at work and we're surprisingly confident about how that will go.

  • Elise - great news about your apartment manager! What's better than saving money and knowing for sure that the quality of work will be great?!

  • we have an appointment with our doctor tomorrow to get our referral. i'm a bit nervous, actually. so yeah. we're moving right along.

    a) Are your parents anxious to be grandparents? they're excited, yes. they already have 8 between my two brothers, so i don't know about anxious. our first thanksgiving c and i had been together for a little over four months, and we were all sitting around after dinner. my mom was holding my neice, and she leaned forward, looked right at us both and said: "just so you know, i'm ready for more grandbabies any time." my dad has offered to be free childcare. right now i think c's parents would be better described by the other definition of anxious. i'm honestly not sure if her dad even knows, although she has told her mom we'll be trying soon.

    b) Do you anticipate some clashing with regard to parenting style? not really, no. i've seen how my parents interact with my brothers' kids. i'm not sure how things are going to be with c's parents, but i think they'll come around--especially where babies are concerned.

  • Not anything really new on the PCP front here... just continuing to work on the guest bedroom, and talk in dribs and drabs about what will go into the timeline decision. I think we'll definitely be starting this year, most likely in the fall, but I just have to wait until he's really ready to say it out loud!

    QOTD:
    a) Are your parents anxious to be grandparents?
Anxious? No. Will they be totally excited when it does happen? Hell yes! My parents want us to be young and have fun for as long as we like before kids. My mom didn't start until she was 30, so she's in no rush for us. His parents already have 3 grandkids, so they aren't going to push.

    b) Do you anticipate some clashing with regard to parenting style?
Hmm, I don't think so. Honestly, I hope and pray that I can be as amazing a mom as my mother was to me! And his parents are so far away that it won't be a problem... plus they are pretty relaxed about everything and would follow our lead if we asked them to do things a certain way.

  • One huge item will be crossed off our PCP to-do list tomorrow: We are having our central AC replaced! Next on the list: a new roof... Slowly but surely getting to where we need to be...

Sylvia keeps saying "maybe we should just start right noooow", and it takes every ounce of logic and reason in my body to not just say "okay!"... But I know we'll be better off if we get a couple of things taken care of first. We're looking at late this year/early next, I think.

    As for the QOTD...
    a) My parents don't know we're planning to parent, and I'm sure if they did they'd be horrified. I also don't know how they'll react to their first non-white grandchild (our kids will be half black). Lots of question marks there.

As for S's mom, I don't think she really suspects we are planning to have kids. Not quite sure, though, because S's daughter has asked us about our plans, and we've been honest with her about the possibility. She lives with S's mom right now, so they might have talked. I think S's mom will be happy for us, even if she has reservations/concerns.

    b) Dunno. We don't live close to either my parents or S's mom, so there probably won't be much "parenting" done. That said, I imagine there will be advice coming at us from all sides! (I'll have to work hard to get S to take the advice with a grain of salt-- she is already planning to wipe our kids' faces with their pee pee diapers because that is how her mother [who is from Mexico] did it with all of her kids and grandkids. Ewww!)

  • Still in the 2ww. One week down one to go.

    A. My parents are really excited, Carols mom... not so much. She worries about us too much because we don't make the same money as her other kids who are parents do.

    B. We will parent pretty much like my mom and dad did so no issues there. I already clash with Carols mom when it comes to the niece and nephew, so I think there will be fireworks there.

  • Paid off the cc today. Now any extra money is going straight into the "sperm savings" (or "seed money" to borrow Mrs. F's pun!)

    QOTD:
    a) Are your parents anxious to be grandparents?
Not anxious, no. My mom is young, but having a grandkid will remind her that she's not that young. C's mom will love another grandchild (C's brother has a 2 yo daughter). I'm really excited about my nana (mom's mom) being a great grandmother.

    b) Do you anticipate some clashing with regard to parenting style? Perhaps. C's mom is quite strict but also sometimes spoils sometimes (odd combo, imo). My mom is quite liberal and will be the "fun" one but may not fully enforce our rules. Hopefully everyone will respect our style...
