Alternative BC?

Ok so... My FI and I are getting married in May. We decided in the fall that we weren't going to have sex until the wedding. I had been on BCPs for the past 2 years and I stopped taking them we stopped having sex. Ever since I've been off the pill my sex drive has increased and I dont want to lose that after the wedding. FI really really doesnt like condoms. Obviously I dont want a baby after the wedding. Anybody using any other method, such as fertility tracking? TIA

Re: Alternative BC?

  • I have used FAM and its pretty good as long as you are diligent with the rules. sign up for fertilityfriend.com and just don't have sex when they say to have sex (its a site really used for people who are trying to get pregnant, but it works just as well as long as you don't have sex during your fertile window or use a back up method during those days.
  • If you really want to learn how to chart, take a class with a teaching couple with www.ccli.org That way you have a teacher to answer all of your questions.

Ditto this.  I've used NFP to avoid for more than 40 cycles now, and I cannot imagine using NFP without having taken a class.

And I would personally never use Fertility Friend to avoid.  It sometimes gives me very oddly calculated ovulation dates that just do not look right by the rules of the sympto-thermal method that CCLI teaches.  I do not trust Fertility Friend enough.  If you take a class, they will teach you how to chart by hand or with software, and how to interpret your charts, so that you will know if something seems "off" with Fertility Friend's calculations.

One thing to keep in mind is that CCLI is based on the Catholic faith so someone that does not ascribe to that may be turned off.  With that said, Taking Charge of Your Fertility has a website and also has a software that people can use to chart. http://tcoyf.com/.

Still, taking classes is a lifesaver, and I can't imagine using NFP confidently without having taken a class.  There are also classes by other organizations and individuals besides CCLI, too.  You can sometimes find sympto-thermal method (the method CCLI and the book TCOYF teach) classes at area hospitals, depending on where you are.  There are also the Billings Ovulation Method, and the Creighton Method of NFP, both of which might be taught in your area.  You can find a whole lot of NFP/FAM teachers and centers at this link:  http://onemoresoul.com/nfp-providers (and yes, it's a religious website, but this is the most comprehensive list of NFP/FAM teachers I've ever found).

I am using Creighton Method myself and my teacher is a nurse, so while the background may be religious based, the teacher may not be one to push it on you. However, I couldn't have learned it on my own, and I check in with her every 6 months or so.

  • I was on the ring for two so years and never really liked it. It really messed with my hormones. Last year I swished to Mirana an IUD and I LOVE it. The insertion was no fun but... talk about stress free BC. We don't have to worry until 2014 and we'll be thinking about kids by that point so it is perfect. HTH

  • I second the suggestion for tcoyf.com, and of course, read the book - Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

I recently quit the pill due to loss of sex drive and other concerns and started charting immediately. We're still using condoms every time though since I'm only on Cycle 2 post-pill.
