clueless with home improvement

So we finally closed last week and this week, I had planned on painting and cleaning the crap out of the tiles/grout and basically making the house move in ready by friday. Yesterday, I took a trip to home depot for the paint. I'm a neutral color kind of a girl so it really wasn't that difficult for me to find the colors I wanted. Anyways, we have a banister that needs major painting and so I bought regular white paint. I started painting it last night and was like, why does it look so weird?? come to find out, that i needed to sand the wood first and then apply enamel based paint!!!!! my parents told me this last night as I sat at the dinner table talking about how the banister was looking. And then...I had bought regular matte paint for the walls, which I was told would look too blah and I needed to buy the satin one. so...i spent like $50 on paint that I don't think I can use anymore. I'll be honest in admitting that I have no clue what I am doing. uuugghh!!!

  • Girl, I'm there with you!  Thank God DH is a handyman b/c otherwise, our house would be a disaster zone.  The people at HD are very knowledgable.  When yo go back to buy anything, just let them know what you are using it for and they'll tell you what you need.

Also, not sure what renovations you are doing, but Lowes IMO has better selection for residential pieces.  There is one on Kendall and 137.

GL with the remodel!  I'm sure it will turn out gorgeous.  : )

  • I think we all start out that way! I would recommend reading the Decorating and Renovating board -- the girls there are very creative and handy. I've learned a lot from there. Also, I have discovered that at Home Depot/Lowe's it appears that the workers are realllllyyy helpful in the mornings for some reason.  I go to the ones in Kendall (HD at 127th Ave and Lowes on 137th Ave).
  • sh!t i totally forgot to lend you the book i was going to lend you!!  it's actually an interior design book that was published by the Nest!!  It's how to pic colors and themes for your first house.  Come by tomorrow and I'll lend it to you!
