The day I was leaving MIL's to head for the airport to come here, I went out to run some errands. I came back sooner than I thought I would, and when I returned, I discovered that sFIL had taken Toby with him to the recycling center. No big deal - he's done it before.
About 30 minutes later, I looked out the window to see sFIL's come back. He hops out of his truck, and whistles for Toby to follow him. As I'm watching, I see Toby, SANS LEASH, sniffing all over the driveway and sidewalk. sFIL walks in the house, calls to Toby, and Toby eventually came inside.
I looked at sFIL and told him that he HAD to use a leash. He looked all sheepish and said, "Ohhh, you weren't supposed to see that."
Fast-forward to last night. H was on the phone with sFIL. He asks how Toby's doing, and sFIL says they'd gone for a ride and stopped at a local park so Toby could sniff around.
H asked if he was on his leash. sFIL said no, that he's "training" Toby to come back to him.
This of course infuriated H. He told sFIL that all it would take was a squirrel, rabbit, or other dog and Toby would be gone. He'd follow his nose, and his ears turn off when that happens. He told sFIL that he HAD to keep him on a leash from now on, regardless of where they were and what they were doing.
sFIL said that Toby was fine, that he'd catch him if he ever ran away, and that "what we don't know won't hurt us."
What!?
H said, "So if my dog gets hit by a truck because he followed his nose into traffic, and I don't know about it, it won't hurt us?"
Then sFIL got pissed off and wouldn't talk to H. On one hand, I'm glad that Toby's comfortable enough with sFIL to be fairly obedient. But I don't want him to risk something happening to Toby just because he thinks he knows what he's doing. We're so appreciative of them for watching him for us while we're here, and we know they love him to pieces. I just hope they heed our warning from now on. Gah...
Re: *smh*
This may sound dumb, but sometimes I think leashes are generational. My parents never leashed our dog. However, everyone I know with dogs now wouldn't dream of letting them off leash.
It's kind of like how some grandparents scoff at carseat and SIDs stuff. "You survived. I don't know what the big deal is."
