so, y'all know I work in a bad area, right?
like, the campus itself isn't that bad but...well, it's not good. City w/ the highest violent crime rate in the US; there were 2 armed robberies on campus in the last month, etc.
Our on campus security presence is good...I set all the phones to have a speeddial to them so I can hit one button and it calls them on speakerhone.
So...they 'fixed' my phone (I have no idea) and switched it to the new system. I come in and it deleted all my speeddials which I fixed so I could still call security...
and then the network went down. Okay, no interwebz, no biggie.
W/ the new phones? no outgoing (even on campus) calls when the network is down.
WTF?
I'm livid at the idea that I'm sitting here and if a student got violent (yes, I've called on violent students), someone had a heart-attack, there was another chemical spill, whatever that I have to hope I get a cell signal.
Re: brilliant, nothing about THAT makes me feel unsafe...

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
I work in a science building.
This year there was a mercury spill. It WAS contained in one room. the levels in the rest of the bulding didn't get above 'normal background' mercury levels. No one had document excessive exposure. But it was bad.
(and I'm really sure they're not feeding me a line because, uhm, I was on the front line dealing w/ the enviro cleanup people and the EPA people. I actually watched them do their measurements. But it's still BAD)
And...
2? years ago there was the acid spill on a student worker. (again, I ended up on the front line...because I ended up being the person doing 'first response'--throwing literally pitchers of water on this girl because an assferret had discoed the emergency shower). No one was hurt. Everything was fine. The spill wasn't significantly worse than splasing one's self w/ draino. HOWEVER, still bad. We changed protocol and we made everyone (including me) take more lab safety stuff.
And, YES, all of the above is bad.
I talked to boss about it yesterday...
boss is as paranoid as I am and is pissed.
I'm going to pin down our 'safety officer' next week at a meeting I hope.
