BR: "Free to be You and Me"? Plus a poll.

Has anyone heard of this song? Everyone in my baby music class LOVES it and remembers it from childhood. I have no clue. But it's growing on me!

It made me wonder...

-- What songs do you remember from your childhood?

-- For mommas, what songs do your kids love? Or, what new songs do you love (if your kids are to young to have an opinion)?

I see the Moon and the Moon sees me

    Little Bunny Foo-foo

He's got the Whole World in his hands

This old man, he played one

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands!

    I like...

Love the songs on Renee & Jeremy CD (It's a Big World; Welcome to this World; Miracle; Powder Blue)

Also am into the Laurie Berkner stuff (Goodnight; The Goldfish; Froggy went 'a Courtin)

And a couple Sesame Street songs too! Like "I've Got Two" and "Five (three) People in my Family" and "Rubbery Ducky you're the one"

Alexa likes... (Or so I think she likes!)

    Itsy Bitsy Spider

  • Never heard that song before either, but looked it up online:

    http://www.freetobefoundation.org/

Now, songs from my childhood?  This is going to sound strange, but I don't remember "baby songs" at all...here's what I remember:

Beatles' "Blackbird" (my mom played guitar in our room and sang this to us each night)

Lots of Pink Floyd (especially "The Wall")...my mom actually was called to our Principal's office when my twin brother and I were in kindergarten because the teacher caught us singing "We don't need no education..."  on the playground!

Lots of R&B and Soul...Roberta Flack, etc.  My mom used to clean house on Saturdays to "Soul Train" on TV.  And lots of Rock...Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc.  I grew up with hippies in San Francisco in the mid-70's, what can I say?

The first song I remember knowing all of the words to is "Cool Kitty" by Mannhattan Transfer.  I also remember loving Kim Carnes "Betty Davis Eyes."

The first "kid songs" I remember are probably from Vacation Bible School and Preschool/Daycare:

    This Little Light of Mine

    Mustard Seed Faith

Getting to Know You (from King and I)

Favorite Things (from Sound of Music)

    Itsy bitsy spider

    Jack-o-lantern

Songs for our little one...well she has quite the repertoire coming her way since DH and I were professional singers!  She gets a daily dose of classical and opera for sure!  And typical kid songs too...

-Dona Nobis Pacem (sometimes in 2 part harmony if DH is around)

    - Ave Maria

-Panis Angelicus (again with harmony if DH is around)

    -You are my sunshine

-Largo al factotum ("Figaro, figaro..." from Barber of Seville)

    -Wonderful World

    -Over the Rainbow

-Count your blessings instead oft sheep

    -Brachianas Brasieleras (song without words)

    -Les Berceaux (Faure)

-He's got the whole world in his hands

    -Summertime

    -God Bless the Child

    -Hush little baby

    The list is endless really...

  • Well, I don't have my LO quite yet, but I do teach a class of 3-4 year old autistic kids each week, and these are the songs they've latched onto the most:

     "The Wheels on the Bus"

     "Itsy Bitsy Spider"

"5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed"

    "Bingo"

When I was a kid, I mostly remember singing silly songs at camp like "On Top of Spaghetti", "Pink Pajamas" (my favorite!), "Black Socks" (in a round), and oddly, John Denver songs like "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" and "Take Me Home, Country Roads."  My mom loved her oldies, and I remember singing "Red Rubber Ball", and "Hang On Sloopy" with her.

  • Oooh, this is fun. I'm remembering more! My dad used to play Hank Wiliams' "Hey Good Lookin'" and we cracked up over that. I blame my parents for my lack of music "coolness." Hahhaha.

DH plays Bruce and other rock to Alexa also. I just read that rhymes, clapping and easy sing song tunes help babies in language development, and she seems to love them!

And I love that song "Five Monkeys jumping on the Bed" too! I'm easy... Good thing Alexa doesn't know that I can't sing. Hahaha. Lori, your little one is lucky to have parents who are singers! :-)

  • I was going to ask if that was from the 70s videos... we used to watch those in school!

Mostly I remember the Sesame Street stuff.  And the theme from Days of Our Lives - that was always naptime at my babysitters' house!  Still makes me want to nap when I hear it!

  • Oh, and as for what I love?  I'm just starting to listen, but I LOVE this one song I heard called "Cookie as Big as my Head"  And we have the BNL cd called Snacktime... and anything from Phinneus and Ferb on tv...
  • I don't have a LO, but I remember lots of songs from being a kid!

    5 Little Monkeys
    You Are My Sunshine
    Itsy Bitsy Spider
    The Song That Never Ends
    Little Bunny Foo-Foo

As I got older it was more like Lori said - my Dad is a music nuts and I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock with him.  My mom listened to a lot of Lite Rock contemporary stuff like Lionel Richie, so I have a special spot in my heart for that, too!

Does anyone remember the radio show Delilah ("Love Someone Toni-i-i-ght"), where she'd play listener dedications?  Holy cow, my mom loved Delilah.

And we have the BNL cd called Snacktime.

"Snacktime" is awesome!!! I love BNL.  My favsf rom that CD are "Raisins", "Allergies", "Eraser", and "I Don't Like", among others, of course!

And Malia, it's true.  There was a study done a few years ago and rhythm development being related to language/reading readiness.  One of the findings that I remember the most is that a child who can clap a steady beat to music typically has a high level of reading readiness at a young age.  Big Smile

  • I def remember "Free to Be" from my childhood.  I had the book and the music, and the songs were great and packed awesome messages, too.

We don't have much music for baby yet, but we do have a Rockabye Baby U2 lullaby CD, which is pretty cool.

My nieces were raised on the Wee-Sing albums and I've learned about a million rhyme and silly songs that way.  Kids LOOOOOOOOVE repetition.

  • OMG... this is a hilarious poll. Brooke will NOT sit nicely in the car unless we have this little kid CD where all the songs are sung by KIDS. It's driving Vance & I insane... but now we know all the lyrics to the songs.

    Her favorites are:
& The Green Grass Grows All Around
    John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt
We're Going To The Zoo (Not sure if this is a popular one or if it's just from the CD)

I'm just going to link the CD because she pretty much likes all of the songs:
    http://www.amazon.com/Car-Ride-Fun-Kids-Sing-Along/dp/B001DZE5VG

  • OMG this poll is killing me! So many memories! Let's see...I'd say all of the songs that pps have mentioned, plus so many others...my mom loooooves singing (she's not great, but she loves it lol) and sang to us constantly as we grew up. She loved all the kid songs, plus the ones that build on themselves (like The Green Grass Grew All Around or There's A Hole In The Bottom Of The Sea).

She also had one 'special' song for each child that we got sung to us at bedtime. Mine was All Through the Night (it's a Welsh lullaby), so I'll probably use that for our boys as well. Smile As a side note, the USAF used it in a recruitment commercial some years ago, which I found kind of eerie at the time. Stick out tongue

Oh, and I totally recognize Free To Be - I had the video, the book, the music...

  • Okay songs I remember from my childhood (and I might be cheating since I teach 1st grade)

"if you're happy and you know it" "5 little monkeys jumpin on the bed" "Itsy Bitsy Spider" "Wheels on the Bus" "Ants go Marching"

     Jaylee's song

"You are my sunshine" "Mr. Sun" "Down by the Bay" "Twinkle Twinkle"

we bought her this CD for long rides in the car and it makes her laugh so much. http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Little-People-Favorites/dp/B000067Q3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1265235800&sr=8-1

  • don't think I've ever heard of that song! I even went to the link Lori posted to see if hearing it could jog my memory but nope, never heard it.

I think most of the songs I remember are the ones already posted...  i think kids these days listen to some of the same songs but there are lots of new ones out there too that I now need to learn :)
