Anybody getting an iPad?

I am a huge Apple fan, love the phone, love the computers! I use a PC for work under duress and only when I have to. I use my Mac for work as much as possible.

I watched the whole conference about the iPad (yes, I'm a huge dork) and wish I had a reason to buy it, but I simply don't.  I think it's more geared to people who travel all the time or older people.

We are getting my mom one though for her birthday and Mother's Day!  It's going to be a surprise.  She is an interpreter and has lots of downtime to read (which will be much better now with the iBooks!) and can surf the Internet too.  She is going to flip. So excited!

What do you guys think of it?

Re: Anybody getting an iPad?

  • It looks cool, but like you, I don't have much reason to use it.  I don't think they really defined their user base very well, which is kind of un-Apple like. I'm sure your mom will love it! My mom has a kindle and it's always attached to her hand! lol
  • We were just talking about the iPad in my communications class last night and it's not worth buying the iPad. It does not have a camera built in nor a microphone, so you can't use Skype or do any web-cam related stuff (i.e. Yahoo Messenger). Also, the browser and book files are going to be limited b/c of the type of software it uses.

Do you remember when the iPod first came out and you could only listen music files on the iPod and couldn't do anything else with them? It's the same type of restrictions; it's like having DRM software but different.

A lot of the Apple users in my class would not waste the money on something that does the same thing as the iPhone or the top of the line iPod (with the touch screen). It also looks like it's not the kind of device that would survive being dropped, either.

  • Initially, I was super excited about it. But I'm going to wait until they fix all the kinks and improve its capabilities before buying one. I always kinda stand on the fence until I've read up on consumer reviews and until the company has released a few models.

Hopefully they'll supplement all the deficiences and make it worth buying! I think it would be great as a laptop subsitute eventually - and I think that's what Apple is aiming for.

  • it's cool, for sure, but I think if they had used the snow leopard OS instead of the iphone/ipod OS it would've hit the mark a little better

people wanted it to be a competition/replacement to notebook computers, but instead it's going to be a competition to iphone/ipods... I do want to play with it, though

  • I definitely want it to compete with my computer, but then I guess it wouldn't be so thin and light and have a 10 hour battery life.  That's why I won't get one.  I won't buy something like that without being able to edit photos or do graphic design.

I would wait too if I were getting it for myself, but I think it's perfect for my mom now, kinks and all.  It suits all her needs.  I'm sure everyone will be impressed she has it!
