Traveling to NYC with baby...questions.

Hi there,

My husband and I are considering a trip to NY for a wedding in June. DD will be about 16 months at the time. I'm assuming we need to take a carseat for any cab rides--how realistic is that? Should we just try to stay on the subway instead? Also, we'd be attending a wedding outside of the city via shuttle--so we'd definitely need a carseat for that, right? I know we'd need stroller, hotel with crib or bring pack-n-play, etc. Any other tips or things to consider? We've been to NYC several times, but never with a baby.

 Thanks!

Re: Traveling to NYC with baby...questions.

  • Cabs are exempt from car seat laws so you don't actually need one for that. There are also some car services in the area that will rent out a car seat so you might want to consider that as well.

  • You should bring the carseat for trips out of the city, etc.  But it's not practical to carry around the city when tourist-ing.  Generally folks either walk or take the bus or subway.  We do on occasion put DD in a cab in a regular seatbelt, but I hate doing it.
  • Also, check with your hotel regarding the availability of cribs.  If your arrival is late, they may give out all of the cribs before you arrive, hotels will often not "guarantee" a crib.  But we have made do on occasion with a hotel air mattress or regular mattress on the floor of our hotel room.

Bring a light stroller, there could be lugging of it up and down stairs, etc.

And in terms of fun places to go:

There are two children's museums (Manhattan and Brooklyn)
The central park zoo and petting zoo

    THe carousel in central park

    are among our favorites.
