WDYT?

About the whole stink with Mrs. Obama and the whole weight issue (with children)?

Re: WDYT?

  • Nancy Reagen had Just Say No, and Hilary Clinton was all about education reform....this is her deal. Every first lady has her "thing" and this is Mrs. Obama's. I'm all for it, as long as it doesn't cause a spike in eating disorders. Not all people are able to be as fierce as Michelle.

  • I just don't think anything is "wrong" with it per se.  The recommendation came from her doctor, so I can only imagine it was health related, not vanity.

  • Can I please soapbox on first ladies (and first gentlemen) in general having a political role and how it pisses me off?

If you want to be politically involved, either do a grass-roots thing or get yourself elected.  Who you're married to shouldn't be giving people of either gender platforms.

  • Amen, GBCK, and the same goes for actors and musicians.

  • What GBCK said, and I'm looking at your Mrs. Clinton.

  • Abso-effin-lutely GB.

Yeah, no. Doctors are just as weight-biased as anyone, and I can't imagine that putting a kid on a diet is ever a good idea, because putting adults on diets isn't a good idea.

Promoting healthful eating and trying to get grocery stores and gardens into cities where they have not been is an admirable goal. It would help if the government stopped subsidizing corn, and if states wouldn't allow food stamps to buy prepared foods. But rattling on and on about the obesity moral panic as if it were truly a health risk for an entire population to have enough food - No.

  • I was operating under the assumption that some numbers were indicating poor health, not just weight for that to be true, bm.

  • I've only heard her talk about the BMI, which is inaccurate in adults, and useless for children. Many of the tests done on adults are useless for children, in fact, because children's bodies are always changing. Holding them to an adult standard of health in any area is a bad - and sometimes dangerous - idea.
