We've decided to just hand over our taxes this year rather than go through the frustrain of Turbo Tax. I was told not to go through H&R block as they're mostly trained on a whim, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of any good, less expensive tax preparers? Preferably those also familiar with CA tax laws, as that's where we spent the majority of the year.
Thanks!

Re: Tax preparer recs?
I've used Turbo Tax online and done my own for the last 6 years. It typically takes me 2 hours. Have you looked at the different programs they offer? I use the Deluxe I think, and it walks me through every thing, I like that, I know that I don't miss anything.
The lady that owns Willamette Tax is a BFF of my parents, she does their taxes every year and they love her. BUT. The only year I had her do mine (2004) I ended up owing a TON because she put down that I lived in Multnomah County (when I didn't) and they had a very high "local tax" then. So I haven't used her since, I find that it's easier for me to do my own.
I leave it to DH to do the taxes...numbers aren't my strong point at all, and taxes stress him the F out, so it usually results in some kind of argument. So...we figure it's best to save the hassle and not use something like Turbo Tax. We may be idiots, but whatever!

Dude I'm bad with numbers also...and it's SO user friendly, seriously. I would totally be willing to help you, walk you through it, if you want?
I might actually try it. I did it a few years back, and it was somewhat of a hassle because I sold stock that year. But now I'm just worried because we lived in 2 states, and DH mentioned something about tuition? I don't know...just seems more confusing than normal and I sort of am tempted to just hand it off. DH refuses to do Turbo Tax again.

It's so easy. It asks you what states you've lived in, if you moved, etc. the best part is that once you put your names, ss#, address, etc, it automatically updates every year for you. So it saves our mortgage company, W-2, student loan info, etc. Literally took me less than 2 hours this year, and I had to put in all the stuff about Bianca.
Try it. You don't have to pay until you are 100% done at the very end.

I used to just use Turbo Tax but last year, we moved plus paying quarterly taxes on DH's income sucked so I had to use an accountant. He charged about $400 to file our federal and state taxes. I just couldn't handle it then; however, I think the numbers should be easier now for us since taxes are being taken out of DH's salary so I may attempt to do Turbo Tax again.
Let me know if you want my guy's name. He was recommended by a coworker.
I was going to say Turbo Tax as well. I just finished DH's and mine tonight. I've used Turbo Tax for years and I was a bit concerned how it would work out since we moved from California this year and we had Paid Family Leave as well as DH's school etc. and it was all in there and it was a piece of cake! Unfortunately because we had to file both states it was more expensive than usual, but it was $88 for Federal, and two state returns, which is much better than paying someone else to do it. I've also done my brothers on Turbo Tax and he has all kinds of investment income and stocks and his was surprisingly easy as well.
On another note my best friend used a tax company a couple years ago one that offered audit protection and to pay the difference if they were inaccurate and there was a discrepancy... she got audited, her taxes were wrong, and the company found a loophole out of it. She and her DH now owe $5000. So using a company doesn't always guarantee you stress free results. =(

I should have married an accountant!! I hate tax time but will be trying Turbo Tax this year for the first time.
We go to Guardian Tax in Gladstone. They are VERY reasonably priced and we've used them for our personal and both business taxes. You can PM me if you want to know exactly what they charge.
