Ughhhh help my face is SO dry...

my face is ridiculously dry. not only does it feel tight ALL.THE.TIME but it is even flakey in spots. i'm super prone to acne and so i've been using the burts bees acne cleaners. i tried OCM for 4 months and it made me break out even MORE so i switched to burts bees cleansers with jojoba oil as my moisturizer.

i was so so dry so i got devita moisturizer which i do like and it worked for about a week, but now my face is back to being ridiculously dry again.

i'm sooooooo sick of it and just want my face to feel smooth :(

last week i went out and got what i *thought* was a gentle cleanser...figured i needed to rate my acne cleanser with something not so harsh, so i got the desert essence thoroughly clean face wash, but i think it's making me skin even MORE dry.

HELP!

Re: Ughhhh help my face is SO dry...

  • Oh wow, I'm sorry your skin is so dry.  I know dry skin is no fun but then to add acne.  Ugh.  Do you think it's from using harsh acne washes?

I'm sure different things work for everyone but I've had really good luck washing my face with raw honey and using avocado oil for a moisturizer.  My skin is really dry and really sensitive and this is the only thing that has worked so far.

I had one area of breakouts from when I tried OCM that wouldn't go away.  I talked to someone at my local co-op who suggested I add a drop of tea tree oil (clears up breakouts) and a drop of lavender oil (soothes the skin) to a bit of jojob oil and dab it on the breakouts.  It seemed to work so I just added some to my jar of avacado oil and I use it on my whole face now.  My skin is definitely clearer than it has been in a very, very long time and nowhere near as dry.

  • Hmmm.. well, how do you take care of your skin? I actually like the Desert Essence pretty well, even though I do OCM. Are you washing twice a day or once? Do you make sure not to use really hot water on your face? Do you moisturize morning and evening or just one? Do you do it right after washing?

    image
  • Are you drinking a lot of water to hydrate your body that way?

Have you been able to rule out any allergens in the products you've been using?

The best luck I've ever had with my face has been the last year or so.  I have a Clarisonic brush that I use twice a day.  I use it at night after smearing my face with Pond's Cold Cream, and then I just lightly rinse the brush.  The next morning in the shower, I use the Clarisonic again and it leaves my face feeling soft because of the leftover Pond's.  Then it gets washed really well.  The brush helps keep me from breaking out, exfoliates, and helps anything I put on my face absorb better.

I moisturize in the morning after my shower, but I don't know that I'll be much help with that.  I just got a sample of Devita and of Juice Beauty, but for the past few years I'd been using Alba's Green Tea & Aloe moisturizer.

Is it possible you're over moisturizing?

i moisturize right after washing in the morning and at night.

is this what i'm supposed to be doing? i know nothing about this lol

    I dunno...can you overmoisturze? It's possible...

I really think the dryness is from the acne products, but if I don't use the my face breaks out like i'm in highschool again. even with them i'm still having quite a bit of acne, it's so dumb and annoying and i'm going crazy!

it definitely could be that i need more water...i'll try that. i was doing really well with my water intake for a while, but i've been lax lately...didn't think of that, thanks!

  • I think you are overwashing.  With OCM, too much oil really dries your skin.  You may need to change the amount of oil that you are using, as well as the frequency.

do you suggest only washing once/day?

I started using it because everything I've found online says it penetrates deeply and is very nourishing to dry skin because of a high level of fatty acids, it helps restore collagen to combat wrinkles and has a lot of vitamins and minerals that your skin needs.  I've also read here and there that it helps reduce scars and redness.  I use this one and a little goes a very long way.

  • When I went off the pill, my face went crazy.  Nothing worked until I stopped washing it completely.  I just started wiping with a wet washcloth during the shower and using jojoba oil in the morning after my shower, and my face looks better than it ever has (I had skin trouble in high school too, though it wasn't extreme).  I do the OCM once a week or so with jojoba only (castor oil made my face very dry).  I think when I was drying out my face with clensers, it was making my skin worse.  Now I get 1-2 spots a month, and they go away pretty quickly.  I hope you find something that works!

interesting!!! i went off the pill a little over a year ago and i bet that's it...my face was great while i was on it...it was still good for a while but now it's just bad. maybe the hormones are finally out of my system? anyway...maybe i'll try washing it less. i think i'm going to pick up some of the avocado oil that PP recommended. it just seems like when i don't wash my face at night i wake up with more zits...but maybe i should just wash it at night and then not again in the morning? we'll see..i'll do some experimentation and see how that goes, thanks for all of the suggestions!

  • Hey Daisy!

I have VERY dry skin...so trust me, I know about that!

Daily,I currently use Earth Science ADE Cleanser and it's fruit oil based. It really helps with my dry skin, and cleans great as well. I use their aloe and almond lotion which is light but works great as well.

My favorite thing to quench my dry skin is the Drink Up mask from Origins. It's probably not the worlds most green product I actually think it's pretty decent and alot better and "greener" than many products out there. It works wonders on dry skin. I don't use it all the time, but every once and a while I put it on for 10-20 minutes, wipe it off and my skin feels awesome!

I think Desert Essence has tea tree oil in it, which naturally disinfectant, so it has drying properties which aren't the best for my skin...

  • I have dry skin that's acne prone as well. OCM was great for about 2 weeks for me, and then it was a disaster and my face hasn't gotten back on track since. Plus, I have such sensitive skin, that once I start having issues, it sort of spirals out of control because my skin tends to be more irritated when I have blemishes, which causes more blemishes, which makes it more irritated, which causes more blemishes...

I would love to hear the suggestions people have for you. My face is awful right now.

BTW-New Seasons is awesome at taking products back! I bought a KMF lotion I used for a week and didn't like-they took it back no questions asked! That's where I get my skin care stuff (except Origins).

I also like Natures Gate Organics spot blemish treatment...

I haven't tried buying anything from New Seasons, but they gave me a sample of the Devita I was wanting to try since they were out of stock.

Also, before I got the Devita sample I bought a moisturizer with SPF and Whole Foods (right before the GTG) and had buyer's remorse (it also had a lot more ingredients than the Devita).  I was able to return it today.  The only question she asked me was "Has this been used?" (it hadn't; there was just sticker shock) and that was after I'd filled everything out and had received my refund.

They also gave me a sample of the moisturizer I returned, that will definitely last at least a week or two.  I was just like "You know, I just can't justify spending $30 on a moisturizer I don't know will work.  I didn't use it, and it sounds fabulous."  And they offered to give me a sample so I could try it out and possibly re-buy.
