Gyno Appointment

This is my first post here but I have posted on other boards before. I just wanted some of your opinions on my gyno appointment today.

So I was put on birth control in June because I had a miscarriage. The dr I saw put me on this birth control that starts immediately. He said that he does this a lot when women have miscarriages. So I have been taking the same brand of pills since June. I then had my period 3 times last month and i just finished my last period last week and on Tuesday I started having cramping again. So I made an appointment today and when he got in there I told him the above and he said well why were you talking that kind of birth control pill. And I said I saw you and you said since we were going on our honeymoon and I just had a miscarriage that this is what I should take. He goes ya usually you only take that for one month then take a regular birth control pill. So I was kinda taken back. He didn't check me or anything he said that having " spotting" (which 3 periods I dont know if I consider spotting, full periods for 7 days) is normal for the birth control i was on.

He said to wait 2 months to see if things go back to normal and if they do not then he will give me other birth control to take to "reset" my system.

So he said instead of me coming back in 2 months if things don't work out he just gave me samples and said if in 2 months your cycle isn't normal just take these samples for 3 months and you should be good.

IS THIS NORMAL!?!? I just feel like wow.....didn't even check to make sure everything was ok or anything...and gave me more birth control pills in case it doesn't work out...really...... sorry long post but I need some advice because my mom is really upset and wants a 2nd opinion!

Thanks girls

Re: Gyno Appointment

  • and just another note...i stopped taking the birth control I was on and am currently on no birth control pills
  • I think you need a new doctor.
  • Yeah, I'd be looking for a new doctor STAT.
  • Did he give you a progesterone only pill or provera the first time in June?

Find another doctor.  He sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't care.  He sounds ignorant and disrespectful.

  • Yes it was a progesterone only pill
  • I would be looking for a new gyno. like yesterday.

  • Sorry to hear about your miscarriage.

I was on a progesterone only pill for a long time(due to migraines) and towards the end I was getting 2 full periods a month.  My dr pulled me off so my body could reset. Then I went back on them after I had dd(and ds) and it didn't happen again.

I am not trying to sound harsh, but did you specifically ask him how long you should take those pills?   How many refills were prescribed? And why did you wait so long to get in for another appointment?

I am not taking the dr.'s side, he could very well be an idiot, but we all have to make sure we are fully informed before we walk out of the office.

I hope you are using some kind of BC.  There are a ton of pills out there, you'll find one that works for you! Also, if you are questioning your dr, it is time to find a new one.

  • Ditto Sally -- get another doc and get a second opinion. And a third if need be.
  • I am so sorry about your miscarriage. I don't know a lot about your cycles after miscarriages, but I can tell you from a terrible experience on the pill that it can really whack your body out and it's important to listen to the signs your body is giving you. Find a new doctor who doesn't blow you off. I had a slightly similar experience where I was having minor difficulty breathing on my pill (which turned into full-blown panic attacks later) and when I told my doctor he said it was probably asthma, which is ridiculous. If nothing else, he definitely should have checked you because bleeding like that (while probably just a result of the wrong kind of pill), can also be indicative of other things like cysts or infections. I would get another appointment with a new doctor. Above all, listen to your body and don't let anyone make you feel intimidated because you know your body better than they do.

  • He told me that this pill would be great and gave me a year's worth of refils! So...if I was only suppose to take them for 2 months why did you give me 12 months worth....I def understand I should have full knowledge leaving the office but to be honest with you...he never said anything about only 2 months or side effects or anything so...I am trying to find a new doc
  • Definitely get a new doctor ASAP. You should not only feel comfortable with your doctor, but confident in their capabilities nad competence. I had a back experience with my gyno, found a new one, and couldn't be happier.
