Have you heard of this? Maybe I've been living under a rock, but this is the first I've heard of this, and I like the concept. I could never go full vegetarian, but imagine if everyone made a sacrifice on one day of the week - it could make a difference.

We aren't vegetarians but we frequently have meatless meals. We'll have ravioli (cheese or butternut squash), veggie lasagna, pasta primavera, pierogies, mac and cheese, a soup like ginger carrot or vegetable with risotto, veggie chili, Indian dinners like aloo mattar, palak paneer, dal, raita, and naan, or a Middle Eastern one with hummus, baba ghanouj, grape leaves, tabouli, and pita. And for some reason when we make pizza at home, it's almost always vegetarian. There are tons of great meatless dinners. I don't consider it a sacrifice; it's just ... dinner.
ETA: Looking at the site I realized I forgot eggplant parmesan. Yum.

We don't do Meat Free Mondays. It's more like a "We are going to eat vegetarian once a week or I'll kick the chef in the knees" deal around here. : )
Interesting. It would very be nice if this idea catches on more!
I eat mostly vegan (eggs or fish very rarely if there are no other protein options, and never milk or meat), so it wouldn't be any change for me.
I believe the idea started with Michael Pollan, who wrote in one of his books that just eating vegetarian one day a week could do enormous things to help climate change.
To be honest, I find it shocking that most people eat meat 7 days a week. I know we probably eat less meat than most (2-3 dinners a week), but I guess I'm just surprised that going meatless once a week is something people aim for and not something that just happens.
Expand your horizons! There's so many yummy vegetarian dinners out there!
Same here. I get asked all the time, "What do you eat?!?!" like I'm starving away over here as a vegetarian. I want to be like, "better meals than a slab of beef and packaged mashed potatoes." DH and I eat so much fun food. We're snowed in so we're having spinach pizza for lunch. Yummy!!!
ahhhhh me too!!! I've only been vegetarian for a little over 6 months but even before that we never at e meat 7 days a week. i think it's because growing up we had a pretty diverse diet in my house and didn't eat that much meat, so I'm so used to it. I can't imagine eating meat 7 days a week...I'd be so sick of it. But, I guess I can see if you grew up eating meat 7 days a week and you're so used to it, that it could be hard to get away from it.

I really like the texture and flavor of meat. So while meat might not be the main part of our diet each night, we do eat it most nights.
We might have chicken, quinoa and lentil stew, or smoked sausage and butternut squash soup. Obviously, it could be some pretty darn awesome meatballs with buffalo, beef, and pork. But it could be as simple as a slice or two of prosciutto in our olive oil sauce pasta. It's not like we eat steak and potatoes every single night with the meat as the main dish. Our diets are definitely varied, too. The nights we do things like popcorn, cheese & crackers, or breakfast food don't count toward the eating vegetarian once a week plan.
The reason we try to do vegetarian one night a week is because I love vegetables. Jeff does not, and eating vegetarian daily would be very hard for both of us, mostly due to food allergies. I'm allergic to tree nuts, Jeff's allergic to soy. There go some great protein sources for both of us. If we were to do pescetarianism, neither of us would be able to eat shellfish. And while we do love fish, it's expensive and hard to find fish that's being done right without harming the environment and populations, and is healthy.
I should add that my previous post wasn't because I was mad or anything. The whole "What do you eat? Be adventurous!" thing goes both ways.
Also, just because we ensure we do veg once a week, it doesn't mean that we don't do it for a week or more now and then, too. We would have done that this week if we hadn't had gone to 5-course scotch tasting last night. They did offer vegetarian entrees, but that would have required the staff to cook up three courses entirely separate for me, due to my allergies, and what they'd planned on cooking. *sigh*
We do Meatless Mondays! We've just started last month, but it's been a lot of fun picking out recipes to try.
Lunches are the hardest because DH usually takes leftover to work for lunch. So far, we've been successful!
I know. Well, I guess I'm not shocked, but I am totally perplexed by people who assume every meal must include meat. I've just never eaten that way. Even growing up, when I ate a lot more meat than I ate now, we sometimes had cheese raviolis with maranara or some other meatless dinner, and nobody in my fam thought anything of it.
Also, spinning off of some other previous posts, I had so much fun discovering new foods and food combos as a vegetarian. I've kept a lot of that in my diet. And I LOVE vegetables. I love meat and dairy too, but veggies are my favorite. (I'm kind of neutral on fruits and grains. lol)
I grew up in a family that ate fish or meat everyday. My dad's idea of a meal was a meat, a veggie, and rice/potatoes/pasta, etc. We ate a lot of hamburger helper with a canned corn or green beans because that filled the requirement.
As a kid, I wouldn't eat green beans unless they were Green Giant brand!
We usually have a meal or two that are meatfree each week, but by getting DH to agree to Meatless Monday, it was my sneaky way to get an extra one in.
One of the blogs I read does Meatless Mondays, too. It's a great concept and one I've talked about with my husband many times. He's not so keen on the idea, though. LOL. To him, dinner isn't complete without an animal protein. :sigh: I can usually squeeze in one vegetarian meal a week and I need to do more. He usually just eats what I make him, so I guess I've no one to blame but myself!
Its so crazy to me that to have one meatless day in most households would make such a difference, and yet, its something so hard to accomplish.
I'll join meatless Monday..I hadn't planned on having any meat anyway lol. Or tomorrow.
